A Scale of Sapphire

Chapter 1: A Sunny Day

I woke up to soft rays of sunlight peeking through the window. I’d had the same dream again, the same stupid nightmare. The sun outside my window felt like something sinister and cruel. I stumbled my way to the bathroom and hopped in the shower, hoping some cool water might clear my head. I shut my eyes as the cold water washed over me. Today would mark the 7th time this month that I’d had the dream, but somehow it was still able to surprise me. I’d never been able to escape before, and I’d certainly never fought back. That silver light had protected me, even if it was only for a moment. Maybe next time that dream came around it’d come back too, maybe it’d be stronger next time.

Or maybe I was just reading too much into things.

I finished getting ready for my day. Teeth were brushed, toast was eaten, and some random clothes were thrown on. I made it to the bus stop about two minutes after the scheduled departure time, but if there’s one thing you can count on with US public transportation, it’s that you can’t count on it to be on time. Two minutes later, a city bus rounded the corner, and I was on my way downtown.

I only had one class scheduled for today, a 300 level animation class that was right up my alley. I was already dreaming of what I might create. Maybe a short fight scene between a kaiju and a giant robot, I did love creature design, after all. My daydreams were interrupted by a text from my best friend, Willow. Admittedly, I wasn’t exactly spoiled for choice when it came to best friend status, but Willow definitely deserved the title.

Tree Girl: Hey, A. Are you finally awake?

Aiden: Yup. Omw to class right now, what’s up?

Tree Girl: You were trying to cross the border right?

                      Same as us

Aiden: I hate you

Tree Girl: And that thief over there

Aiden: Soo, are you just gonna do the whole skyrim intro?

Cuz I can just mute notifs for a few hours

Tree Girl: You know I’m hilarious

I was actually wondering if you wanted to meet up for coffee today

There’s some stuff I wanted to ask you about

Aiden: Sure, want to meet up after class? Also how did you know I was sleeping

Tree Girl: After class sounds great, and you’re consistent. You always sleep in crazy late

                      Nerd

Aiden: Asshole

               C’ya <3

Tree Girl: Bai <3 ;p

You know what? I decided right then and there that today was going to be great. I was going to see my best friend, I was going to make a cool robot or a giant monster or something, and I’d even treat myself to a visit to my local comic shop later. Today would be a good day, and no weird dream or too bright sun would change that.
