A Scale of Sapphire

Chapter 15: Surviving Willow

Willow’s POV

After my conversation with Crab apple and the others, I finally went inside to assess my situation. I had to make sure I was able to meet my basic needs, then I’d go from there. The first thing I did was try to use the faucet, but that was an absolute nonstarter. My guess was that when all the plants shot up so fast, their roots damaged whatever pipes or pumps brought water to my home, and that wasn’t great.

The only fresh, clean water I had was the half empty glass that I’d left on the counter, whatever ice was now melting in the freezer, and (if I was desperate) the toilet water. So the water situation was dire, what about food? I usually kept the place pretty well stocked, and I was definitely thankful for that now. I still had bananas and apples left, some of my favorite protein bars, and a cupboard full of soups and the like, along with several other assorted odds and ends. I definitely needed to eat what was in the fridge quickly though, that stuff would spoil fast. All told, it looked like I had enough non-perishable food to keep a full size human fed for a couple weeks, and given my recent changes, I was hoping I might be able to stretch it out a bit longer.

Shelter was the one thing I wasn’t worried about. My house was still mostly intact, with only the living room showing any real damage. One of my plant friends had broken through part of the wall, but knowing that the whole garden had agreed to help protect me, I couldn’t really hold it against them. Speaking of, as I looked through the new whole in the wall, I could see several incredibly large plants inching across the yard, forming a circle around my little home.

By the end of my little evaluation, I had put together a list of what I needed to do to ensure I was safe and secure:

  1. I had to get a water source, I wasn’t sure how, but I needed to make it happen. Maybe I could catch rain or something?
  2. My food supplies would last me a while, but they wouldn’t last forever, and I couldn’t be sure of how long it would be before things were back to normal. I was never much of a gardener, but I figured it’d be a lot easier to do if I could just ask my tomato plant how it was feeling.
  3. I needed to learn how the whole feeding magic to plants thing worked. If I couldn’t figure that out, then my floral defenders wouldn’t defend me for long.
  4. I needed clothes, I was about half my previous height at this point, and I really wasn’t into the idea of surviving the apocalypse naked.

Once I finished compiling my list, I had a little moment of inspiration. I jogged over to my room and grabbed an old tshirt and a pocket knife. I roughly cut out most of the back so my wings could fit, and threw it on like a dress. That was one problem solved… ish. Now for the tough ones. I made my way back outside and started towards the garden, maybe they’d have some ideas on how to handle the rest.
