America 1881: Legend of the West

Chapter 55 Gun oil and wine, women and guns

Oak Village, like many small mountain villages in the American West, is isolated from the world.

The village is named after a large oak tree at the entrance of the village. The history of the village is much longer than that of Pitkin County, which was just established this year to the north. The history of the oak tree is much longer than that of the village.

Most of the villagers in Oak Village were moved here by the previous generation. When they arrived, most of them were already starving beyond human form, and finally survived on acorns. The oak forest behind the big oak tree also provided them with materials to build houses and furniture.

So later, there were people, cattle and sheep here.

They are very grateful and hope that generation after generation can live peacefully here.

However, recently, gunfire often rang out in the mountains near the village.

The villagers didn't take it seriously. Hunters often hunted in this mountain. Not far into the mountain from the village, it was said that there was a hunter who built a resting hut.

There may be a new owner there now.

Most of the villagers had never seen the outsiders. From time to time, they would send a wrinkled old man with two horses to exchange some supplies.

They never disturb new guests in the mountains, and spend time with each other in peace.

But today, Uncle Malik, who was elected by the villagers as a representative, stood at the door of the hunter's cabin.

The reason for being chosen as a representative was simple: he was the only one who knew the location of the cabin.

The reason for standing at the door of the cabin is also very simple.

Oak Village is in trouble.

……

"Bang, bang, bang"

Chen Jianqiu tried to pull out the revolver instantly from his waist, holding the trigger with his finger and moving the hammer continuously with his other hand.

His gun was left at Chen Lanbin's, so Sean's was "requisitioned".

But every time I try, I can only guarantee that the bullets of the first three shots have relatively reliable trajectories. For the remaining few shots, either the action breaks the rhythm, or the bullets fly to nowhere.

"Well, it can barely scare some farmers, that's enough."

Adam, who was leaning against the tree, was rarely sober today. He tilted his neck and took a sip of wine, and said in a sinister tone.

Chen Jianqiu sat down on the ground and dropped the revolver at his feet.

Adam left the tree he was leaning against, walked over, bent down to pick up the gun that fell on the ground, and took it in his hand.

"Let's go back to the house," Adam said.

The two men returned to the hunter's cabin.

Asuka went out to hunt some game, while Sean went to check several warning posts they had set up nearby. Uncle Holmes had been studying the treasure map since he arrived here, except for being sent to the village to exchange supplies.

Adam sat down against the table. He placed Chen Jianqiu's revolver on the table and began to disassemble it skillfully.

Barrel, cylinder, hammer...

Adam's disassembly was quick and methodical. After disassembling it, he took out a bottle from his pocket.

"Gun oil, their 'wine'." Adam pointed to the revolver that had been dismantled into parts on the table, then found a piece of cloth from somewhere and started wiping the parts.

After the maintenance was completed, Adam reassembled the revolver easily. He took out a bullet and stuffed it into the cylinder.

He put his ear to the gun body, turned the cylinder with his hand, and listened carefully to what was going on inside, with a smile on his lips.

Then, he handed the revolver back to Chen Jianqiu's hand.

"You should treat her as your lover, care for and caress her." Adam's eyes were a little blurry.

Chen Jianqiu's mother-in-law solo, for the time being, she still can't understand the man in front of her who has a soft spot for widows.

However, he still took out the bullet and stuffed it into his holster.

Suddenly, there were two knocks on the door of the cabin.

The three people in the room looked at each other.

The door rang twice more, this time a little hesitantly.

Uncle Holmes stood up, walked to the door, and opened it.

A man dressed as a farmer with a big white beard stood at the door.

"Um, hello, I'm a villager from Oak Village outside, and my name is Malik." The farmer said carefully.

"What do you want?" Uncle Holmes blocked the door and had no intention of letting him in.

"We've run into a little trouble."

"Ok?"

"The animals in our village have been attacked by wolves recently. So far, four sheep have died."

"Don't you have guns yourself? It shouldn't be difficult to deal with these beasts." Chen Jianqiu, who was behind Holmes, was somewhat disapproving. He had no intention of solving these people's problems.

"Normally, these wolves would come out of the mountains and attack villages only when the mountains are blocked by heavy snow and food is extremely scarce in the mountains. And after the attack, they would quickly return to the mountains."

"I don't know why this time, but during this period, they began to attack the village frequently, and they seemed to regard the sheep in the village as their only prey."

"We are exhausted and don't know when they will come. If this continues, they may start to eat people."

Uncle Malik's voice started to tremble a little.

"I know you are professional hunters, so help us and we will try our best to pay you,"

When Chen Jianqiu heard about the reward, he was a little interested, but when he thought that this small village would not be able to raise much money, he lost interest.

However, something suddenly occurred to him.

"You should go back first. Our friends will arrive in the village when they come back."

When Malik heard that Chen Jianqiu agreed, he was immediately ecstatic and shouted "Hallelujah" and walked out of the wooden house.

Towards evening, both Asuka and Sean came back.

Chen Jianqiu told Feiniao about the matter, and Feiniao frowned:

"This is impossible. Unless the wolves are starving or encounter a greater threat, they will not attack human villages, but it is not winter now."

"No matter, clean up, Sean, you and Uncle Holmes stay here, the three of us go down and take a look." Chen Jianqiu made a decision.

When the three of them rode horses to the village, the sun was setting.

The sheep had returned to the fold, and the men in the village took their guns and lurked behind the houses near the sheepfold.

Chen Jianqiu saw Malik from a distance who had come to seek their help before. At this time, he was scolding a child.

"Go home quickly, those beasts are coming soon." Malik waved his hand to drive the little boy away.

The little boy reluctantly walked back, but he did not follow his father's instructions and went back to the house. Instead, he found a corner and hid, with a cunning light in his eyes.

"Is there any gunpowder in the village?" Asuka asked.

Malik nodded.

A group of people, under the command of Feiniao, pushed out a barrel of gunpowder and spread a line along the front of the sheepfold.

"Light this line of fire when the wolves come." After Feiniao finished his instructions, he and Chen Jianqiu walked out of the village entrance, diagonally facing the direction of the sheepfold, and found a place to hide.

After a while, pairs of green eyes appeared in the woods beside the village.

Wolf, here we come.
