America 1881: Legend of the West

Chapter 601 1 Treat everyone equally

The IRS Commissioner's first reaction was basically the same as before at McKinley.

Turn around and run.

But he found two men also wearing suits and hats appearing at the door.

One of them put his hand into his clothes.

Green stopped in his tracks.

He wasn't sure if what the man reached in and touched was a gun, and he didn't dare to bet on whether Chen Jianqiu would attack him here.

"Mr. Director, come and sit down. The coffee will be delivered soon."

Chen Jianqiu's voice came from behind Green.

Green had no choice but to turn around and come to the table and sit down opposite Chen Jianqiu.

He looked around, looking a little embarrassed.

"What's wrong? Mr. Director, didn't you call me here?" Chen Jianqiu looked at Greene playfully, "Relax, we are not meeting on the rooftop."

"Are you an undercover agent?" Green looked at Chen Jianqiu in confusion.

"you guess."

Green decided not to speak for now.

Because he felt that if he said another word, he would be humiliating himself.

Chen Jianqiu picked up a leather box from under the table, placed it on the table, and pushed it in front of Green.

"Mr. Director, these are our company's accounts and related information you requested. Please review them."

Green looked at the box in front of him and didn't know whether to open it or not.

The waiter came over with two cups of coffee and a small plate of sugar cubes.

He glanced at the box on the table, curled his lips, placed the coffee and sugar in front of the two of them, then turned and left.

"Because the company has too many account books, I selected some core statements. The IRS can look at them first. If there are any problems, I need to provide the basic raw data and then I can get them."

Chen Jianqiu picked up the coffee in front of him and took a sip.

He drinks coffee without sugar.

Green still didn't know what to say.

Who knows if the account books and statements in your box are really there? Even if they are, God knows if those account books and statements are real!

Green put his hands under the table and his eyes wandered over the box.

"Try this Jamaican coffee." Chen Jianqiu put one arm on the chair and held a coffee cup in the other hand, drinking as he said.

Green thought for a moment, picked out a sugar cube from the small saucer, and dropped it into the coffee cup.

He stirred it with a small metal spoon and then picked up the cup.

After taking a sip, Chen Jianqiu spoke.

"You don't really think McKinley will choose you as his running mate and appoint you as vice president, do you?" Chen Jianqiu put down his coffee cup and said slowly.

"cough, cough"

Green choked on the coffee in his mouth and coughed.

He put down the cup, not daring to look directly at Chen Jianqiu, but his brain began to work rapidly.

Is there a third person in the small room where he and McKinley were talking?

How could Chen Jianqiu know so clearly?

Is there anything in America that he doesn't know about? Is this person a devil?

Chen Jianqiu looked at the reaction of the director of the Internal Revenue Service and knew that he had guessed correctly.

The President actually has a lot of bargaining chips, but he is still used to the way he used to sell his position and get titles in the last election.

So, Chen Jianqiu continued his analysis:

"Mr. Director, have you ever thought about whether Hanna would agree to it if Mr. McKinley nominated you as vice president, and whether other big guys in the party would agree?"

Green was silent.

Indeed, the main reason why he was able to obtain the position of IRS director was because he came from a poor background, had a wild career, and had a way of dealing with tax evaders.

But in terms of status and foundation within the party, compared with those popular candidates, it is really far behind!

Green realized that he might have been cheated by McKinley.

"Mr. Chen, what do you mean by this?" The IRS officer still had a tough mouth.

"Nothing else, Mr. Director." Chen Jianqiu smiled, "No matter how well you do in your current position, it won't change your political career."

He changed the subject.

"However, I really like your resolute style of doing things. I am also from the west. You know, for some things, the western way can easily solve problems."

"After you leave office, my company very much welcomes your arrival."

Green was silent for another two minutes.

"Putting aside my matters, at least I am still the head of the IRS, and you should accept our investigation."

The head of the IRS said in a deep voice.

He can't forget what he does.

"No problem." Chen Jianqiu patted the box, "You can check the accounts here. I will provide you with anything you need, but..."

"But what?" Green glanced at Chen Jianqiu.

"But now that we've checked, shouldn't we treat them equally?"

Chen Jianqiu snapped his fingers.

The two men in suits outside heard and quickly disappeared.

After a while, five or six men dressed like them came in.

They carried three large boxes into the cafe.

The few customers in the cafe glanced sideways and looked this way.

But when they saw how the men in suits were dressed, they all turned their heads back.

This doesn't look like a character that's easy to mess with, so it's better to stay out of other people's business.

The men in suits carried the box to Chen Jianqiu and Green's table and placed it on the ground.

"What's in here?" Green stared at the leather boxes suspiciously.

"Should the IRS also check the accounts of Standard Oil Company?" Chen Jianqiu kicked one of the boxes.

The box didn't move at all.

Apparently, it was already full.

"How do you have their accounts?!" Green was shocked again.

"The IRS is not the only one who places undercover agents in companies, we do too," Chen Jianqiu said.

This time, Green walked out of his seat, squatted down and opened the box.

He picked up the account books in the box and looked through them. The more he looked at them, the more he became more and more devastated.

As an old tax auditor, Green could tell that these account books were probably genuine, copies of the originals.

"Mr. Chen, do you know that your behavior is illegal!" Green said weakly.

"Oh? So? Aren't you planning to get my account books in the same way?" Chen Jianqiu asked.

Green was completely speechless. He could only continue:

"Information obtained through illegal means cannot be used as evidence in court!"

This was the last stubbornness of the IRS chief.

"I am providing you with these, and I don't intend for you to use them as evidence in court." Chen Jianqiu said with a smile, "But with these, you can go to the court to apply for an investigation order."

Green struggled for a long time and decided to accept the box provided by Chen Jianqiu.

"But how can I take them away?" He looked at the four boxes, three large and one small, with hesitation in his eyes.

"Don't worry, I will have these things sent back to the IRS with you." Chen Jianqiu added.

Green had nothing more to say.

After obtaining these accounts, Green handed them all over to the professional verification officers in the IRS.

After comparison, they quickly discovered what was wrong with Rockefeller.

There is a difference between the sales amount and the amount declared and paid by the company.

This means two things.

The first is that Rockefeller's company does have tax evasion problems, and the second is that the IRS can apply for an investigation order from the court based on this.

Rockefeller, who was busy wrangling with the antitrust Taft Jr. in New York State, soon received news that the IRS planned to apply to the court for an investigative order to investigate Standard Oil Company.

Rockefeller never dreamed of this.

He planned to go find Mr. President first to find out what was going on.
