Chapter 161: Quirk Awakening and Visit

_________ POV Beru_________

"So~ You're telling me that you just decided that you needed to blow off some steam, and did so by randomly attacking over a hundred villains all by yourself?~" I stood at Toga's side as she seemed to just dumbly scratch the back of her head...

For some reason, I really don't like the way she spoke about things.

"Not only that~ You've also apparently almost been killed~ The only reason you managed to survive was due to the fact that your quirk awakened in the middle of it all?~" Her quirk could previously only copy the appearance of others.

It was purely cosmetic, and she was still the same old Toga underneath. But now she also seems to be able to copy quirks... For example, she was able to copy some physical aspects of my original quirk.

Usually, even copying 0.1% of my strength should've been able to wipe the floor with the villains inside that bar, even if they were outnumbering her by quite a lot.

Unfortunately, by the time she managed to awaken her quirk she was already in a bad state. I came in at the end, she was already drifting in and out of consciousness while fighting them apparently.

"Yes... It was rather unexpected. All I was thinking about was how... You would never have been brought to that state by a few random villains. I was angry at myself, at my weakness. Then I just realised, that I COULD be more like you."

The way she explains it, it's almost as if quirk awakenings happen subconsciously... In all honesty, that might actually be the case. Quirk awakening is so rare that it's simply hard to say much about them.

There is little information about them, nowhere near enough to come to any conclusion. For now, all I can assume is that the driving force that awakened her quirk was her desire to be more like me...

I wonder how my quirk would look like if I awakened it? Is there even a way to awaken my quirk?

I assume Toga awakened hers because her desires matched her ability, taking the form of others, and her desire was to be more like someone.

Together they allowed a mutation to happen... This phenomenon is really not explored enough for me to be able to tell for sure.

"Welp~ That was dumb and extremely reckless of you~ Even with your new ability, you likely would've gotten killed if I didn't decide that I felt like spending some time with you today~" I need to do my best to discourage her from doing something this stupid ever again.

But this is Toga I'm talking to...

"Heh... I had no doubt you'd come to save me! You're always there when I need you..." Damn, get this girl some prescription medication, her obsession with me is as strong as it's always been.

"That doesn't mean you can just jump headfirst into danger~ I wasn't even planning on coming to see you today~ I just happened to feel like it~" My words seem to have flown over her head.

She may be a bit more understanding than she was at first, but she's in a state I'd like to call 'Daydreaming and not listening to me at all'.

"...Beru, I know it wasn't the right thing to do... But it worked out in the end, didn't it?! I even got stronger from it!" She's still trying to argue in favour of her actions.

"I don't care~ Let me put it like this~ If you were to die because of a few random villains~ Then I'll look for a way to bring you back to life just to kill you myself~" Intimidation is sometimes useful...

But, for some goddam reason, I forgot that Toga prefers to take everything from me as a compliment.

"Ooh... I'm glad you care that much!" Fuck sake.

_________ POV Narration_________

"Whatever~ Point is~ Never do that shit ever again~ No more arguing about it~ If you really feel like killing something then just give me a call and say you want some pie or some shit~ Coded language and all that~"

Toga could only nod at Beru's words. She was aware that she had put herself in great danger for no good reason.

But she was on the brink of having a mental breakdown when she decided to go there. Her obsession for blood and killing was still present, but now she also had an obsession with Beru.

She always had one, but now she truly wanted to be like him. She was growing sick of having the random urge to kill someone.

She wanted to not only copy his strength, but also his mental fortitude. She wanted to be able to finally come to the same turning point in life that Beru had once reached.

Unknowingly, this even brought her much closer to it than she was previously. From the beginning, her desire for death and blood was stronger than Beru's, so it was presumably going to take more time to cope with.

This near-death experience made her realise a few things about her actions. Looking back, she couldn't find her actions as anything but embarrassing, she wasn't indulging in the memory of freshly spilt blood like she usually would after a killing day.

She was embarrassed at herself for having worried Beru, for having let herself fall to that state.

Still, she was right to say that she had profited a lot from the event. A near-death experience made her much stronger. Now she was also able to copy the quirks of the people she transformed into...

There was a little condition though...

"Your powerup is still impressive~ But it probably only worked because you know how my quirk works, and you have a good idea of my resilience~ I doubt you'd be able to copy things you don't know about~"

"Yeah... We'll have to try later... For now, I'm tired..." And just like that, Toga turned around in bed and simply started snoring, no longer giving Beru any attention.

"..." The insectoid was left a bit hanging by the abrupt ending of his conversation.

It was still early evening though, so Beru didn't feel like sleeping through the rest of the day. Instead, he decided to go and see how some other people were doing...

Keeping himself busy was not that hard, after all, he had a lot of people to spend time with if need be.

He also felt like visiting an old friend... A person that he had spent a lot of time with...

Someone who was currently still being held in prison.

It was rather odd for a renowned hero to visit a random villain in prison though. Good thing Beru was never one to care about such things.
