Employees Of The Unnamed Convenience Store

Chapter 1 – Yohlan Dainen

Buzzing… I can hear buzzing.

A cold breeze washes over my face.

Immediately in discomfort; I woke up.

I slowly open my eyes and am greeted with the ceiling’s lined fluorescent lights beaming on my face.

An unfamiliar ceiling, and an unfamiliar place.

I pull myself up from the cold marble floor, and realize that I am in-between two empty shelves.

Based on my surroundings, it seems I’m in a convenience store.

It’s quite a sizable convenience store too. But all the gondola shelves are empty… Weird.

Wait a minute… Why am I here..?

No way, did I pass out in a convenience store?

I instinctively look over to the counter to find the cashier. Only to see an unusually clean counter and a receipt dangling off of the register.

I look at my attire; it seems I am still in my high school uniform.

Peakstone... High School...

Oh yeah… Memories flood in, and I start to remember everything from the start:

My name is Yohlan Dainen and I attend Peakstone High School as a Junior.

I have brown hair, brown eyes, and an average face. To put it short, I was merely just a boring and plain existence.

I initially grew up extroverted as a kid. I was a social butterfly, but became an introvert when I entered high school.

Unaware of my change, the acquaintances from my middle school days tried to reach out to me. But they realized I was no longer interested in group activities, and they decided to seek other social connections.

Don’t get me wrong, I can still sense social cues and converse with others.

But I was no longer as energetic, as compared to now.

Now, I'm a loner. But to be honest, it doesn't feel bad.

If I recall, a few days ago, I broke up with my long-distance girlfriend, Delilah. Since it wasn’t working out.

We were initially friends in Middle School. She was very introverted and followed me around.

Turned out we shared the same interests. Eventually progressing our relationship to the point where we hung out and played games together.

Just like that we clicked together as a couple.

Delilah brought excitement into my life, and I was genuinely happy to be with her.

But unfortunately she got separated from my district due to family problems.

Well, we kept calling each other and played online games together. But gradually our interactions became more rare, to the point where I expected her to completely cut me off.

Even when I figured out she was cheating on me in my sophomore year. I felt nothing because our relationship had deteriorated to the point where I fell out of love for her.

I immediately ended our relationship, blocked her and cut her out of my life…

Or so I thought.

Today at lunch, I got a call from an unknown account named ‘Yoyo’...

It was my nickname in Middle School.

Tap.

"Yohlan, can we please talk? I know this is probably too late, but…"

It’s Delilah.

"Please, it took me so long to find you. You… You blocked me on all of your apps, and created new accounts."

Her voice sounded desperate.

"Just hear me out…"

I went out of the cafeteria to make sure our conversation was private.

Then for the entirety of lunch, the crazy bitch tried to talk me into rekindling our relationship again.

"...It only took me three months to realize that my boyfriend never loved the real me..! He only loved me for my body."

"After realizing that, I broke up with him."

So what?

"I know I’m dirtied… I admit that… I did terrible things to you…"

Good for you.

"But I can’t forget the happy memories we shared together… It must be the same for you too, right?!"

Shut up, you trash.

"Please… Let’s go back to when the world was so colorful."

"You were the first person to color my world. You loved and accepted me, even though I was a weird and quiet girl."

"R-Remember our gaming sessions, and our Cubecraft world? I preserved your house and automatic farms-"

I hung up.

I blocked her new number.

Please...

Never walk into my life ever again.

Sigh…

The bell rang and everyone in the cafeteria began to disperse back into their classrooms.

I hurriedly went back to my table and stuffed my partially eaten sandwich into my lunchbox. Then followed suit with the other students.

I wonder if I’ll ever find excitement in my life again…

After leaving the school building, I open my phone and notice the numerous missed calls during class.

Jesus christ, 36 missed calls.

Don’t you have classes too, Delilah? What the hell are you doing?

Tch.

Fuck, this totally ruined my mood.

On my way home, I decided to stop by the convenience store and buy some ice cream.
