15- The Red C

Vixen looked at the parchment in confusion, she didn't know what it was but she could surmise it wasn't anything good. Now that she had a network of people who dealt with this sort of thing she walked back to the knight's barracks. Lucien was no where to be found, nor lance, but one of the knights that trained a boy in her class was there so she asked him.

"Greetings Knight Roy. Can I have a moment of your time?"

Roy looked up and smiled, "No need to be so formal, we are all of equal standing now."

"Very well, I was hoping you could tell me what this is?" She handed the parchment over to her.

He reached for it and opened it, he screamed his eyes went wide, "where did you get this??"

"Some random at the knighting ceremony handed it to me during the meet and greet."

Roy had a serious look on his face, "I'm sure you've heard of them before but they're a pretty powerful league of assassins called the Sanguine Covenant. What's unusual though is that they sent you anything all. It wouldn't serve them well to announce themselves if you were a target."

"What would they want then?"

"I don't know but it certainly isn't good."

Vixen left the knight's barracks and went on her first patrol for the night, new knights worked the graveyard. Most would rather work during the day so only the most senior guards get that time slot. Vixen had her mask and cloak on as she walked around the city looking for any sign of trouble. She was deep in thought, the Sanguine Covenant was one of the major organizations that made their new home at the capital Runeford. They were a powerful organization, people hired assassins for personal or political gain, revenge against someone else, or even torture for gathering information.  They were definitely a shady bunch of individuals that were somehow brought under one banner.

Vixen's night was quiet, eerily quiet a shadow danced past her face she looked around but didn't see anything, peered around some corners and again saw nothing. She turned, and glanced upward in time to see someone running up the side of the building as if gravity didn't apply to them.

'There's only two things that can accomplish something like that; magical or supernatural or worse both,' she thought cursing her luck on the first night. She rushed towards the direction she saw the entity ran, towards the duke's castle.

The creature was fast, so much faster than any human she had ever seen which led her to believe the creature was more supernatural than magical, hoping it was not also magical. She ran through the city until coming up to a dead end, she pushed mana to her legs like she used to as Cadel to jump on to the roof of the buildings. Leaping from building to building she tried to catch up to the thing but was unable to. She got to the duke's castle, jumping down off the roof she sprinted through the archway towards the door where two knight's barred her path. She took out her swords and disarmed them both quickly without stopping, "Sorry the duke is in danger," she apologized. She thrust the doors open, and took the stairs three at a time, she was in such a rush she didn't take the time to notice what the inside even looked like, other than clean. The duke, even though a pig, did have a wife but he thought she was insufferable so he slept alone. Vixen didn't know this, she just tried to find a large bedroom facing the same direction the creature was seen running. The reality however, was far outside her expectation, once she got to the top floor of the castle, guards were strewn about bleeding. Every guard had had their throat cut, some had their heads removed, and she could see the figure pick up the duke with one hand. She threw one of her extra swords, the figure dodged it at the last moment not aware anyone had been trailing behind it. Vixen barged into the room and was now face to face with a man, but this was no ordinary man. This man had pale skin, black eyes that left no room for his scalera or the whites of his eyes. These eyes were all black, the skin of this man was pulled taut and its hands had long claws each the size of a dagger. It opened its mouth to screech a horrifying sound while Vixen tried to get the creature to release the duke, she rushed forward trying to use a feint to distract it, but the creature used one of its long claws to slice the neck of the duke as easily as a knife goes through butter. The other hand used its claws to stop her blade, blood burst from the duke's neck splattering Vixen. The creature dropped the duke's body before advancing on her, it started off walking swaying at the shoulder as if drunk. It then suddenly rushed her, it was on her too quick for her do react properly, but she managed to block a portion of the damage. Her blood flew along with her sword a deep gash in her arm, the creature on top of her large canines seem to spring to life as they went for her jugular. She placed her hands underneath its chin and used as much strength as she could muster to prevent the creature from biting, her its mouth open, its tongue slithered out of its mouth and licked some of the blood off her arm. Its eyes went wide and jumped off her and headed to the window. Her arm, mostly healed from her regen ability she received from the troll, leapt to her feet light gathering in her hand. The creature superman jumped through the window of the top tower in which they were located, she aimed well and through her radiant spear of judgement striking the creature through the torso. There was a loud shriek as the creature disintegrated into dust, blown away by the wind. Panting she turned to check on the duke's condition when files of knights came from the stairs. Their weapons were all drawn and pointed at Vixen.

"For the murder of the Duke and his personal guard I hereby place you under arrest." The captain of the Dukes guard said waltzing out to the front.

"While I wasnt able to save the duke, I did kill the monster that attacked him," Vixen argued.

"Where is the body?"

"It jumped out the window, and when I used my magic on it, it disintegrated into dust."

"Do you take me for a child? Who would believe such a tale?"

"Except its the truth."

"If its the truth, then surrender peacefully while we conduct an investigation. As far as I can tell, you bum rushed two guards attacking them. If you were here to help the duke why attack his men?"

"I did tell them he was in trouble, and I didnt kill the guards did I?"

"No just the personal guards and the duke himself, I saw your disdain for him during the knighting ceremony."

"Dont you also disdain that pig?"

"No remorse either...You going to come quietly?"

Vixen unbuckled her sword sheaths and unbelted her daggers and tossed them at the captains feet. "There I am unarmed now and will come peacefully, I assume this will be an impartial investigation?"

"Why of course."

The guard captain nodded signaling to some of his men who manacled her hands together each one helping her walk through the crook in her arm as she was taken to a dungeon cell underneath the castle.
