Chapter 97.2: The Rights and Duties of Nobility, and the Cleansing Mission

In the manor.

Thor once again met Marquis Raymond, the most legendary figure in the kingdom over the past thirty years. Rising from the offspring of a lowly viscount's family, he had become an idol to countless noble scions.

"My lord!" Thor performed a knight's salute.

"No need for formalities. What brings you here, Baron Thor?" Marquis Raymond asked curiously, looking at Thor.

"My lord, I have heard of the orc tribe incursions in the north. As a noble of the kingdom, Eagle Ridge is willing to contribute to the kingdom by helping cleanse those wretched orcs," Thor explained his intentions.

As mentioned earlier, he was seeking permission to participate in the cleansing missions. The orc tribes presented both a crisis and an opportunity for him, and he was determined not to miss it.

"Oh, you wish to join the cleansing mission?" Marquis Raymond was somewhat surprised. Although he had urged many noble lords to participate, only a few with considerable strength had been willing to do so. While Thor was strong, Raymond considered him weaker than some of the others and saw significant risks in the cleansing missions.

"Yes, my lord," Thor nodded.

"Very well. Young noble, you are brave. I look forward to your performance. Frank, give Baron Thor a commission," Marquis Raymond said with a smile, signaling to a knightly attendant nearby.

"Yes, my lord!" The knightly attendant quickly nodded.

Thor then took his leave, following the knightly attendant to obtain the commission.

"Dresrosa family!" Marquis Raymond chuckled before returning his thoughts to more pressing matters. For him, this was a minor issue, not something that required much attention. What mattered more was how to solve the current problems.

Even though he had sent additional forces to the northern regions, the orc tribe incursions had yet to subside. Even the Eagle Knights had suffered losses, which greatly pained Marquis Raymond.

He was not from one of those ancient families with deep foundations; his family had only recently risen from a viscount's house. Their rapid rise had not given them time to accumulate much, and every bit of strength under his command was precious. Every loss was hard to replenish.

But he had no choice. Unless an orc war broke out, or the Dragon Knights suffered significant losses, the kingdom would not provide more support. He had to hold on.

These thoughts intertwined as Marquis Raymond focused on the northern battlefield.

Meanwhile, Thor quickly obtained a commission—a document bearing the seals of Marquis Raymond and the Northern Province's administration. This document granted him the right to participate in the cleansing of the northern province.

Even without this commission, he could still lead his forces to cleanse the orc tribes, but with it, the merit points he could earn would be doubled. The cleansing mission was worth one set of merit points, and killing orcs was worth another.

Just like before, if he had a task in hand to eliminate threats, defeating the Minotaur tribe would earn him double the merit points.

Of course, he didn't know this before and couldn't take action.

Now that he knows, he certainly has to take advantage of it.

After receiving the appointment letter, Thor immediately instructed Ryan to purchase the necessary supplies and more slaves.

This time, he wasn't just here to receive his enfeoffment; he was also there to buy supplies.

Now that the Maine Valley had stabilized, it naturally needed to expand in scale.

Population was the most critical factor to consider.

The previous population was far from sufficient; he needed more people.

Perhaps due to luck, the destruction of many territories led to a continuous increase in weapon prices, but the price of slaves began to drop slightly. Even the Habsburg Chamber of Commerce, which monopolized the slave trade, lowered the prices.

As a result, Thor spent less than 200 gold coins to purchase 2,000 slaves, including many female slaves.

At the same time, the prices of other supplies also dropped significantly.

This time, Thor spent much less gold at the Habsburg Chamber of Commerce.

This brought a smile to his face as he left.

Morning.

As the morning sun gradually rose, Thor set off with a large group of people.

When he arrived, he had only twenty people with him, but when he left, he had several thousand people and dozens of carts.

Even though they could now produce their own food, he still needed to buy a large number of daily necessities, especially since the population had just increased by another 2,000.

Ten days later.

Thor returned to the castle with his people.

With Thor's return, Eagle Ridge became lively.

Thor had officially become a baron.

This also meant that they were now citizens of a baronial territory.

This was especially significant for the freemen.

Previously, even though Thor had granted them freemen status, it only applied within Eagle Ridge. Once they left, they could easily be sold back into slavery.

But now things were different.

With Thor becoming a baron, they were now freemen of a baronial territory, and according to the kingdom's laws, they would be recognized as true freemen.

In theory, no one could sell them again, except themselves.

This was immensely significant.

Not to mention the knights.

A knight of a pioneering lord wasn't considered a true knight, but a knight serving a noble lord was a genuine knight.

The difference in status was substantial.

"Lord Baron!"

Outside the territory, Peros led a group of people to greet him, unable to suppress his excitement.

When he first learned that he was being sent to the pioneering territory to assist young master Thor, he was filled with despair and felt that his life had taken a dark turn.

A pioneering lord had virtually no hope, and there was even a risk to his life.

But no one could have imagined that in young master Thor's territory, he would witness one incredible event after another.

In less than a year, young master Thor, this fledgling eagle of Dresrosa, had already become a baron.

It had only been a year.

Just one year, and it was no longer just a miracle—it was a divine act.
