Chapter 47: The Compassion of a Goddess

“Lover? No, she's familia. Don’t let your imagination run wild. Her name is Xanthia. We share the same father and are both members of the Papadoupalos familia, but her situation is a bit more complicated.”

To prevent Santhos from letting his curiosity cause trouble, Dionysius patiently explained.

Santhos's interest was immediately piqued, and he looked at Dionysius with a sympathetic gaze. “Isn't this a common scenario in our circles? An illegitimate child, I get it. My dad has had affairs with many women too. He’s particularly fond of girl group idols and loves to boast about his taste... But at least he hasn't fathered any children.”

“You... you idiot! You don’t know a damn thing!”

Dionysius had initially avoided clarifying his relationship with Xanthia because he was annoyed by the wild imaginations of those who read too many novels and conjured up elaborate scenarios.

In the past, when his relationship with Xanthia was distant and almost non-existent, he never mentioned her to his friends. If any of them, acting on a misguided impulse, disturbed her, it would only worsen their relationship and create more problems for him.

But now, Dionysius noticed that Xanthia seemed to be gradually emerging from her shadow, embracing a new life, and becoming less socially anxious and sensitive. Naturally, he wanted to integrate her into his circle of friends and restore her status as a young lady.

“Alright, alright! I admit I don’t understand. Here, I’ve got some sunflower seeds, which is pretty much like having drinks. Now spill the story,” Santhos said slyly, eager for gossip.

Dionysius realized that Santhos had likely mentioned “illegitimate child” deliberately to probe the truth.

So, he decided to tell the story. After all, Xanthia was the most innocent party in it. Although Dionysius’s childhood in the familia wasn’t great either, Xanthia had suffered immensely.

Listening patiently, Santhos began forming an impression of Xanthia—a frail, innocent, tragic, dull, and ordinary girl. To him, her existence seemed to merely satisfy Dionysius's sense of responsibility and morality. The indifferent and emotionless Santhos thought so.

Time passed quickly, and the day quietly came to an end.

Xanthia's time as a beautiful girl in a JK uniform had come to an end. However, her presence left a mark on the school’s forum and various chat groups, an influence that would slowly ferment over time.

The next day, with the holiday officially over, Xanthia dutifully donned the classic blue-and-white sports uniform of the high school.

Last night, before the dormitory lights went out after evening study, the name “Xanthia” was frequently mentioned in the boys' dormitories of Class 1-3. They all eagerly anticipated her continuing to wear the stunning outfit. They hadn’t had enough of admiring her yet...

“Dude, you know I’ve been secretly observing Xanthia for a while and identified her as a rising star. I have an eye for beauty!” One boy in the dorm boasted during their tea party.

“From my observations, it seems Teacher Emmanuel doesn’t care about her at all, so she probably has the privilege of not wearing the school uniform,” he added.

“Damn! If Teacher Emmanuel granted her that privilege, I’d fully support it!” Another boy excitedly chimed in.

“Count me in! I support it 100%!”

“Yeah, JK uniforms are technically school uniforms too though Japanese. If all girls wore them, it’d be great…”

“Alright, stop dreaming. Do you think you’re living in an anime?”

“I heard some high schools have introduced new-style uniforms, and it’s led to some girls taking maternity leave…”

“Hahaha… Hey, you’re right. Short skirts are indeed convenient…”

“You idiot, stop talking nonsense. But seriously, I hate those skirts with built-in safety shorts. What a horrible invention! Which jerk came up with that? Can’t we have a little trust in the world?”

“Yeah, it’s a real buzzkill.”

"By the way, why do you think Teacher Emmanuel doesn’t care about Xanthia?"

"Her grades are terrible, and her attitude towards studying isn’t great. If she doesn’t care about her own education, why should Teacher Emmanuel bother?"

"True. Look at students like Hera and Marcus; Teacher Emmanuel doesn’t pay any attention to them either."

"But their families are wealthy. Even if they coast through high school, they'll have opportunities later on."

"So what if Xanthia's familia isn't wealthy? She's beautiful. She can marry a rich man and live comfortably."

"Yeah... This 'Earth OL' game is harsh on us ordinary players. At least pretty girls can use their looks to get ahead. What about us?"

"Ahem, good-looking guys can also find rich benefactors. But for someone like me, with average looks and no money, I have to rely on studying."

"Even if you excel academically, you end up working for conglomerates, practically begging for a job. And you might still get laid off for no reason at all. This life game is really pointless!"

"Alright, alright, let’s not dwell on such depressing topics. Let's look forward to tomorrow. Maybe Xanthia, our goddess, will bless us with more of her presence before some rich pig snatches her up."

Conversations in the boys' dormitory often revolved around girls, crude jokes, worldly affairs, and complaints about everything under the sun.

Unfortunately, this time their lively discussion was interrupted by an unexpected inspection from Teacher Emmanuel.

The boys were inevitably caught red-handed, and they knew they would face a scolding during the next class meeting. Being first-time offenders, they were spared from writing a formal apology but couldn't escape a verbal one.

Teacher Emmanuel enjoyed making unruly students perform "self-criticisms" on stage during class meetings, embarrassing them to maintain discipline. This practice only worsened his already notorious reputation among the students of Class 1-3, who had become quite adept at calling him "Terrorist Emmanuel".

What disappointed the boys even more than the impending public reprimand was that Xanthia, their goddess, did not continue to grace them with her beauty. The last bit of warmth in their world had vanished.

The slight consolation came in the form of Thessaloniki First High School's scheduling of the monthly exams. The school had wisely given the returning students a full day to adjust, review, and prepare for the exams.

This day passed quickly, filled with self-study periods that allowed for a carefree approach to pre-exam preparations.

The day flew by, and with that, the monthly exams officially began.
