Chapter 70.1 The Ball (Part 1)

I kept a blank expression on my face as I looked around at the guests of the Dunois family. Who would have thought that I would be at a real ball? I'd only had one costume in my life, and that was for my high school graduation.

At most: a weird costume, though not a business one, I wore only twice on Halloween at the request of a girl: the first time we played a couple of "Akatsuki", where I had to drag around "Samehada" all night long and only respond to "Kisame", although the photo shoot with my "Itachi" liked it.

The second time I had to carry a spear and a Lancer. Now I'm playing myself at the traditional birthday ball for the heir of the Dunois family. Everyone is dressed to the nines.

All the women and girls were dressed in fancy gowns, ranging from the latest modernity to mid-eighteenth century models. Hats and caps, wigs, wild hairstyles, fans, scarves, even jabots. Dresses were richly embroidered with metals and stones, sending endless beams of light down the ornate walls of the mansion's ballrooms. The men kept up with the fairer half.

Someone arrived in a very modern outfit: tails, waistcoat, trousers and very modern shoes, and someone "returned to the past" and displayed a man's dress. It is a French caftan, richly decorated with embroidery, up to the knees, wide but fitted, if anything, these clothes can often be seen in the movies.

Paul was wearing just such a thing and "dissected" it, having fully preserved the image, that is, he took an elegant cane in his hands, put a triangle on his head, and on his feet — black pants, stockings and heeled shoes, with a snow-white scarf around his neck.

Together with the handsome face of a young Tom Cruise and the blond hair, this dandy became a movie "Lestat", although he didn't even know it, because in this world, as it turned out, there was no book or movie with this character. I, with Laura's help, was dressed in a more modern but appropriate version of a man's dress of the same eighteenth century.

I didn't feel very confident at first, but when I saw what the Dunois family was wearing, I calmed down. After the first hour of the ball, I stood next to the hosts and greeted them politely when they paid attention to me, but it was rare, because I stood up, so it turned out to be "I am here, but little noticeable".

It worked well because all the attention was on the birthday boy. Only a few mages and wizards paid attention to me. Then, as Paul explained, he would walk around the hall and pay attention to the guests. I asked him to come with me, but Angelica hissed with a smile that he should not overdo it or they would misunderstand him, so they let me go for a while.

The ball itself was set up in several large halls with vaulted passageways. Lots of light, lots of simple and magical decorations on the floor, walls and ceiling. Lots of hired servants serving drinks, although there are tables with snacks and drinks in each of the three halls. What else? Well, there's live music, yes.

It's crowded, but the air is fresh — magic rules! I'm not going to talk about the power of magicians, their peculiarities, because I completely drowned out my feelings, stopping at the level of a simple gifted, that is, almost an ordinary person, with correction for better intuition.

By the way, not all the guests arrived on time — many are deliberately late, but this is the norm, it can be done. So I didn't see the Delacours, who were also invited.

As soon as I got away from Dunois, Laura took me under her elbow to the dance hall, where we opened the dance. By the way, I'd been able to dance since I was alive, and I'd learned a few things in this life, too. The first few dances we did not break up a couple, but then there was her suitor, whom the girl did not reject and, it seems, she likes him, and the third dance Laura spent with him. And I slipped out of the hall, deciding to have a closer look at the audience, but without showing my face.
