Chapter 4 4. The Slums of Queens

Chapter 4 4. The Slums of Queens

The subway in New York operates 24 hours a day, but the frequency will be reduced at night.

During this time period, there are mostly homeless people in the subway, and they need a place with a good temperature to spend the night.

After getting on the subway, Lin Feng found that the last two carriages were full of rubbish, and a few homeless people were sleeping soundly. It seemed that the train manager had nothing to do with them.

Lin Feng, who was 191 centimeters tall, found a place to sit in the front. There were also several tattooed men in the same compartment. They looked very unfriendly. They might be gang members.

The New York City underworld is rich and nighttime is when these guys come out, especially midnight.

Fortunately, Lin Feng didn't have any interaction with them. Perhaps the gangsters didn't want to cause trouble when facing the 191cm tall man.

After getting off the subway, Queens is behind you. This is a place with a huge gap between rich and poor.

Fifth Avenue is a slum in this district, where black people gather, and few people would choose to enter here at midnight.

It's hard to imagine such a place in bustling New York. Gary Smith has lived in a violent place since he was a child, and it's hard to have a healthy personality.

But this is not a problem in Lin Feng's eyes. He will leave New York and fly to Los Angeles soon.

Strangely, the moment Lin Feng set foot on Fifth Avenue, a strange feeling arose in his heart, maybe this is the hometown complex.

The streetlights on Fifth Avenue were often broken, and a few stray dogs hung out.

Not far away, Lin Feng heard a burst of laughter and found a group of young people graffiti at the corner.

He planned to go up and ask where Andrew's adoptive father lived.

The group of young people consisted of men and women, dressed in fancy clothes and with strange hairstyles, they looked like idlers.

"Hey guys, I want to ask you guys about someone."

Hearing the sound, the group of graffiti youths turned around and found that it was a big, tall guy with some muscles.

The leading black man wore a hood and had a skull tattooed on his right arm, looking very unfriendly.

"You idiot, you know who you're talking to, get out before I kick your balls."

Lin Feng was furious. He knew that he was not an opponent who could do more with less, but he still didn't flinch.

"You dwarf better keep your mouth clean, or I'll rip your ass out."

Feeling a little regretful after speaking, Lin Feng felt that these guys could pull out their pistols and kill him in an instant.

The black man in the turban threw away the spray paint in his hand, and came up angrily, "Who do you think you are, a tall, silly looking guy? Don't think I'm afraid of you."

After speaking, the black man pressed his back pocket and made a gesture of drawing a gun.

At this point, Lin Feng could only bite the bullet, "I just want to know if Andrew lives here, nothing else."

Seeing that he was holding a basketball in his hand, a young man called out to the hooded man, "Billy, don't do anything stupid, he's Gary Smith."

Lin Feng was surprised that this kid actually knew him.

The black man named Billy turned his head, and then looked Lin Feng up and down.

The youth behind continued: "Just two hours ago, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers."

Billy released his hand from his back pocket, "You are Gary Smith, Mr. Andrew's adopted son."

Hearing that he called Andrew Mr. Lin Feng heaved a sigh of relief. It seems that his adoptive father may have some influence in this area, and it is not easy to gain the respect of gangsters.

"It's me. What I want to find is Andrew's adoptive father."

Billy laughed and punched him, "You actually forgot your family name, did Syracuse University brainwash you? It seems fortunate that I didn't go to any university, it was a waste of time."

Under their guidance, Lin Feng came to a low house, the door was only as high as a child, and he needed to bend down as much as possible to climb in.

The door was half ajar, and there was a faint light from inside. The place, which barely counts as a house, looks shaky and could be knocked down by a gust of wind.

Lin Feng turned his head and nodded to Billy and the others, "Thank you, bro."

Just as he was about to knock on the door, Billy stopped him and took two ten-dollar bills out of his pocket.

"For Mr. Andrew, he is a good man, and I can only help so much."

Billy spread his hands, his eyes were sincere.

Lin Feng didn't know what happened between them, but one thing was clear, Andrew's adoptive father had a lot of prestige in the eyes of Billy and his group.

"Understood." Lin Feng nodded again.

"Listen boy, you have to let those rich and old people in Los Angeles know that New Yorkers are amazing, Queens is indomitable, understand."

Billy's words reminded Lin Feng that he seemed to have seen the slogan "Indomitable" on the wall at Fifth Avenue before, perhaps it was the stubbornness of the people in the slums of Queens.

After Billy and the others left, Lin Feng knocked on the door, and there was a coughing sound, and then the sound of wearing slippers.

Soon, a woman stood at the door, she was surprised, "Gary, why are you here?"

"I'm sorry that I couldn't tell you the result immediately after the draft." Lin Feng was a little moved, and the memory of Gary Smith suddenly flooded into his mind.

This beautiful-looking woman is none other than Andrew's adoptive father's biological daughter Evelyn, who is also his step-sister.

Evelyn is three years older than Gary and now works as a convenience store clerk.

Andrew's adoptive father contracted severe pneumonia a few years ago, and because he did not have medical insurance, he could not afford the high medical expenses.

Now it is difficult to survive only on Evelyn's monthly salary of [-] knives.

Lin Feng stepped forward and gave her a big hug, which surprised Evelyn.

"Mr. Andrew, I mean is father okay." His voice trembled a little.

Evelyn didn't speak, but turned sideways, with tears in her eyes.

Lin Feng bent down and climbed in through the small door, and there was a smell of being covered inside.

The lights in the room were dim, and an old man was lying on the bed, looking weakly at the door.

"Galgari?"

Andrew muttered to himself.

Lin Feng walked to the bed, memories kept flooding into his mind, from the time he had memories since he was a child until yesterday.

Billy was right, Andrew was a good man, a good man in the slums.

There are several empty medicine bottles on the table beside the bed, and it seems that the medicine has been out of use for a while.

"Father."

Lin Feng called it very naturally this time, because now he is Gary Smith.

After entering high school, Gary began to rebel and wandered around the streets, rarely going home, he even hated the life here, but now, Gary realizes that this is his home.

Andrew and Evelyn are my family, and I will always be the chosen one in Queens.

"Los Angeles, I knew you'd be in the NBA three years ago. Gary. Surprise everyone. People."

Andrew tried to sit up, but he refused Evelyn's support, got up and bumped fists with Lin Feng, and then the two hugged tightly.
