Lys

Memories

Most of the demon generals got along with Lys just fine, and she got along with them. Sure, Rojio the jinn initially came off as kind of melodramatic and bombastic, but he was a pretty nice guy if you talked to him one-on-one. To her mild surprise, it was the Beastkin Fenx that she wasn’t exactly a huge fan of.

She initially thought he seemed really cool, with his fast, silent movement and flashing daggers… but then she tried to actually talk to him. He seemed so concerned with maintaining his cool, silent, edgy persona that he was incapable of being a normal fucking person for even a second.

She kind of understood, admittedly. She’d gone through a phase in middle school where she would tell herself that she was a cool loner who didn’t even want to be friends with all the other superficial kids, and she’d stride around the playground muttering to herself like a weirdo, wearing an oversized coat draped over her lanky frame.

Pretty much her only friend during that period had been the other “weird kid”, who was an incurable and embarrassing weeb. They ended up falling together, not because they initially had much in common but because neither had anyone else. Adam had been the one to introduce her to anime, although in retrospect his taste was complete trash, and she still remembered how much it hurt when he tried to tackle-hug her.

At least she’d mellowed out some since middle school, although unfortunately she couldn’t say the same for Adam. Dude seemed to be constantly dating different freshmen girls and went around bragging to everyone that he had a job as a cosplay photographer. She had at least made a few other friends in her school’s anime club.

But maybe that’s part of why Fenx bothered her so much. He reminded her of herself, of a part of her life that she preferred to not think about.

She tried talking to Aurelia about him, but Aurelia assured her he was just “like that” and told her not to take it personally. “He’s not a bad guy, really, but I agree he could learn to open up. I took him in after humans had burned his village to the ground and on some level I think he still doesn’t feel safe.”

She felt kind of bad after learning that. Here she was, trying to recover from trauma, judging someone else doing the same. It was at that point that she resolved to try to do her best to befriend him.
