I had heard so much about this place and yet the reality was somehow different from what I had imagined. I couldn't help but feel slightly flabbergasted by its appearance.

 'I thought there would be a lot more…red' I mused expecting the kind of barren desolate landscape that I had assumed but the reality was far more complex.

Tall walls stood surrounding the large city with their surfaces covered with thick leafy vines. The walls were imposing but they weren't the harsh blood colored barriers I had envisioned. Instead they seemed almost alive as if the walls itself were fighting against the surrounding nature. 

The buildings within those walls were a stark contrast to what I expected. They were pure white with their surfaces gleaming even in the dim light of the night. It was clear they were designed with the heat in mind reflecting the sun's rays during the day to keep the interiors cool. The design although practical was still elegant and beautiful in its simplicity.

As I gazed out beyond the city walls on the other side I could see where the green grass that surrounded the city slowly gave way to reddish-brown dirt and desert land.  The contrast was striking as if the city a bright oasis amidst a sea of barren land

 'Wow' I thought genuinely admiring the view that had a harsh kind of elegance that was captivating in its own way.
