Rebirth to the Eighties to Get Rich

Chapter 233: Two Single Men

After Ji Jianwen came back, he and Ji Jianyun went to see the reservoir. He knew what the reservoir looked like before, but now it was more well built by his third brother.

That embankment was stronger, and many places had been repaired. It was better than before

“Third brother, you spent a lot of money to build this reservoir, right?” Ji Jianwen asked.

“It was a lot.” Ji Jianyun nodded.

The cost was more than 5,000 yuan, and there were some hidden costs that could not be calculated. The total was quite a lot.

For perspective though, the prices were generally very low at this time. He needed a lot of money for it, but it was a lot cheaper when everything was calculated. Otherwise, he would have to spend a lot more money.

“Next year, you can raise a lot of livestock in this place,” Ji Jianwen said after looking at it.

“I’ll just raise some more sheeps and ducks, but not anything else,” Ji Jianyun said.

There was only Uncle Xu and Su Anbang here at the reservoir. At night, there was only Uncle Xu. The dogs had grown up and had been trained by Ji Jianyun to be very fierce. They were not as big as the ones raised at home. If the dogs tried to challenge Da Hei, then Da Hei would definitely have the upper hand, and the dogs would just be considered a good opponent.

Under normal circumstances, no one would dare act recklessly at the reservoir. Everyone knew that this was Ji Jianyun's territory.

Ji Jianwen saw the two dogs, and they grinned at him when they saw him. They only did that because Ji Jianyun was there. Otherwise, they would have pounced on him.

“This New Year, you and Uncle Xu will take turns on duty for the holidays,” Ji Jianyun said to Su Anbang.

“Okay,” Su Anbang agreed.

Ji Jianyun told Uncle Xu about it, and then went back with Ji Jianwen. On the way, he met Xu Heshan and Su Zhumao.

When these two saw their boss, they quickly said hello.

“Go and help keep an eye on the reservoir.” Ji Jianyun said to the two men.

“No problem!”

“Don't worry, boss!”

Xu Heshan and Su Zhumao immediately replied.

Then, Ji Jianyun took Ji Jianwen back.

Xu Heshan and Su Zhumao were Su Anbang's childhood friends. Su Anbang introduced them to work here. Ji Jianyun asked them to learn how to drive. Both of them successfully got their license. After that, they helped deliver goods every now and then so that Ji Jianye could rest.

When they were not driving, Ji Jianyun would assign them other tasks.

These two were good workers. They were young and hadn't married yet, so they didn’t have too many worries. Su Anbang still had a wife and child at home, so he couldn't stay overnight. Although Uncle Xu was staying here, Ji Jianyun would sometimes ask one of them to stay over with him before leaving the next morning.

These two men were now used to it. They came over on their own when they had time without Ji Jianyun's ordering them to do it.

They have been working and paid for several months, so both of them could almost afford to buy a bicycle. A Big Golden Deer model costs 155 yuan. In the past, they had to pay for a ticket to buy it, but now they didn’t need to do that if they had the money.

They started saving their wages in August. Since they were newcomers, their salary was 30 yuan. This was not as good as the 35 yuan the others got. It has been almost five months now. This month's salary has not been paid yet. After the new year, they would pretty much have 155 yuan for the bicycle.

They were both frugal. They compromised to pay half to buy the bicycle and share it.

It was much more convenient to use this to go back and forth to the reservoir. It took only fifteen to twenty minutes to get there by bicycle, but it took more than an hour to walk by foot.

Of course, while they saved this money themselves, the rest was given to their families. Their families didn't have much of an opinion. The jobs they had were really good, and they were working under Ji Jianyun, so it was a safe job!

Life was much better now than before, but bicycles were still rare. The bicycle was at Su Zhumao's house for three days and at Xu Heshan's house for three days. They rotated sharing like this.

They arrived at the reservoir. When Su Anbang saw them coming, he grinned and asked, “Do you want to play cards?”

The reservoir was very busy this year, but they essentially needed to feed and catch the fish. The other thing they had to do was tend to the fruit saplings on the two mountains around the reservoir. However, there was no need to water in this cold weather. It would get busy again once it was spring next year. More sheeps and ducks would be raised next year, so there would be a lot of work.

But right now, it's relatively idle.

They would get together, and play some card games or something to entertain themselves.

Uncle Xu watched them play “Fight the Landlord”1, and sometimes he would play a few games.

“Are your families happy with the new year's goods this time?” Su Anbang asked with a smile while shuffling the cards.

“Definitely.” Su Zhumao replied with joy. “When I took it back to my mother, she was extremely happy. My nephews were also very happy.”

“The boss gave me a lot,” Xu Heshan also said.

His family was extremely happy. They had heard that Ji Jianyun, the boss, would not treat his employees badly. It turned out to be true. There were also gifts for other festivals, and there were so many gifts during the New Year.

Next year, their salary would increase to 40 yuan with everyone else.

“After the New Year, you'll be one year older. Have you figured out marriage yet?” Su Anbang asked while dealing the cards.

These two younger friends now had a serious and stable income, so they were definitely able to start a family.

“I'm going to save some more money first,” Su Zhumao replied. He was thinking of this, but he didn't have any money yet. He and Xu Heshan bought a bicycle with the money he earned, and the rest of the money was given to his family.

Xu Heshan was in the same situation.

They didn’t give all of their wages to their families. They earned 30 yuan a month, but they gave 10 yuan to their family, which was a lot. This was also because they were single. If they get married in the future, they might not have a penny to give. Once they were married and separated from their family, they couldn’t eat at home, they had to go and cook the food themselves.

Their parents at home could still work, so there was no need to take care of them yet.

“You don't have to worry about that. If you like someone, hurry up and don't let someone else have the advantage. If someone like us can earn a secure salary and it's as high as this, then there’s not much else. This is your advantage,” Su Anbang said to these two bachelors.

Compared to these two childhood friends, Su Anbang was living a stable life.

Of course, after he and his wife separated from his family and lived by themselves life was really hard. He relied on growing things in the fields to survive.

But it’s better now. His aunt (Mother Su) introduced him to this job. Now his family’s conditions were really not bad. His wife was living well, they were saving money, and chickens were being raised at home. They were thinking about saving up for a few more years to see if they could renovate the dilapidated yard at home.

The yard where they lived now was indeed a bit dilapidated, and in this winter, the wind would get in through the cracks.
