Reborn and Ready: The Not-So-Awesome Adventures of Li Wei

Li Wei sat in the modest family home as his father spoke. "Li Wei, you've received an offer to become the temporary captain of the guards in Longjiang ," his father announced. "It could lead to a permanent position if you prove yourself."

Li Wei took in the information without any display of emotion. He had expected this moment, knowing that his family's connections would eventually open doors for him. His middle uncle, Li Yun, had a daughter married to Captain Zhang, who managed the western sector of Longjiang. This connection could provide him with valuable support in his new role.

"It's a good opportunity for our family," his father continued. "You'll be able to establish yourself and gain respect among the guards and townsfolk."

"I understand," Li Wei replied, maintaining a calm demeanor. He viewed this as a responsibility—an obligation to uphold the family's honor while ensuring his own stability.

His father nodded. "Remember, your Uncle Zhao's connections will be beneficial. Captain Zhang has a reputation for being fair but firm. Make sure to reach out to him once you arrive."

Li Wei nodded again, mentally preparing for the challenges ahead. He knew that respect in Longjiang would not come easily; he would need to earn it through hard work.

Upon arriving in Longjiang , Li Wei felt the weight of expectations settle on his shoulders. The town was bustling with energy—merchants hawked their goods, children played in the streets, and guards patrolled with authority.

As he made his way to the guard station, he observed the layout of the town: its sectors divided into east, west, north, and south—each overseen by a captain. The mayor's faction held significant power here, and Li Wei understood that navigating this political landscape would be crucial.

Before reaching the guard station, Li Wei decided to visit Uncle Zhao, the mayor. He entered the town hall and found Zhao seated at his desk.
"Uncle Zhao," Li Wei said respectfully. "Thank you for the opportunity to serve as captain of the guards."
Uncle Zhao looked up and smiled. "Ah, young Li Wei! It's good to see you again. Your family has done much for our town, and we're grateful for your willingness to take on this responsibility."
"I'll do my best," Li Wei replied.
Uncle Zhao chuckled lightly. "I have no doubt about that. In fact, I'd like to see your skills firsthand. What do you say to a friendly spar?"
"I would be honored," Li Wei said.
They stepped outside into the courtyard where they faced off against each other. As they exchanged blows, Li Wei felt Zhao's strength and experience but also sensed surprise at his own skill.
After several minutes of sparring, Uncle Zhao called a halt with a grin on his face. "Impressive! Your skills are exceptional for one so young."
"Thank you," Li Wei replied.
Zhao nodded thoughtfully. "You have potential beyond just leading guards here; I've been considering recommending you to our sect as an outer sect disciple."
Li Wei raised an eyebrow. "Sect?"
"Yes," Uncle Zhao explained. "A prestigious martial arts sect that takes in exceptional students under five years old with rare talents as inner disciples." He said.

Li Wei listened as Uncle Zhao elaborated on how joining such a sect would require migrating with one's immediate family to their headquarters; they provided for all needs but ensured loyalty through this arrangement.

"You see," Uncle Zhao continued, "children who join must be exceptionally gifted—some even younger than you and stronger than I am."

Li Wei considered this information carefully; while it was an honor to be recognized by someone of such stature, he felt no desire to uproot himself or pursue that path.

"Thank you for your offer," he said steadily. "But I believe my place is here."

The mayor smiled approvingly at Li Wei's response before shifting topics. "Let's discuss your duties as captain of the guards."

As they concluded their conversation and Uncle Zhao handed him the captain's badge, Li Wei felt a renewed sense of purpose wash over him. He would serve the people of Longjiang using his skills to maintain order and protect this town.
