The Café Between Worlds

Chapter 12: The Birthday Plan

Ren paced back and forth behind the counter of the café, his mind racing. Kazuha’s birthday was just around the corner, and he wanted to do something special for her. It wasn’t every day that you got to celebrate a birthday in the afterlife, and he figured it was the perfect opportunity to show her how much he appreciated her being by his side.

But what to do? What to get her?

He glanced over at Kazuha, who was busy arranging flowers by the window, completely unaware of his internal struggle. Ren knew that he had to get this right—after all, she had been his best friend for as long as he could remember. They had shared so much in life, and now they were navigating this strange afterlife together. She deserved something meaningful.

The door to the café swung open, and in strolled Kazuma, the self-proclaimed "adventurer" from another world, followed closely by Yusuke, the spirit detective who was never far from trouble. Ren had invited them over to help brainstorm ideas, but so far, they hadn’t been much help.

"Yo, Ren!" Kazuma greeted with a wide grin. "What’s up? Need help planning a party for the lovely Kazuha, huh?"

Yusuke leaned against the counter, smirking. "You sure you’re not just looking for an excuse to get closer to her, Ren? I see right through you, man."

Ren groaned, rubbing his temples. "Guys, come on. I’m serious here. I need to find the perfect gift for Kazuha, and I’m running out of time. I was hoping you two could help me, but so far all you’ve done is tease me!"

Kazuma and Yusuke exchanged a glance, then burst out laughing. Kazuma clapped Ren on the back, nearly knocking him off balance. "Relax, man! We’re just messing with you. But seriously, finding the perfect gift for a girl? That’s tough. Maybe you should just give her, I don’t know, a coupon for free food? That always works for me."

Yusuke nodded, trying to keep a straight face. "Or you could go with something classic, like… a flower? Or maybe a rock. Chicks dig rocks, right?"

Ren shot them both a deadpan look. "A rock? Really, Yusuke?"

Yusuke shrugged, still grinning. "Hey, it worked for me once. But in all seriousness, Ren, why don’t you get her something personal? Something that reminds her of you guys' time together?"

Kazuma scratched his head, looking thoughtful for a change. "You know, he’s got a point. Kazuha’s not just any girl, and you’re not just any guy. Get her something that has meaning, something only you could give."

Ren sighed, leaning against the counter. "You’re right. I want it to be special. Something that reminds her of the times we spent together."

And then, as if a light bulb went off in his head, Ren remembered something—something from their time in the orphanage. Kazuha’s name meant "leaf," and she used to collect fallen leaves whenever they played in the park together. She always said that leaves were a reminder of how things change, but also how they stay connected to the same roots. It was a small detail, but one that had stuck with Ren all these years.

"That’s it!" Ren exclaimed, his face lighting up with excitement. "I’ll get her a leaf necklace! It’s perfect—symbolic, personal, and it’ll remind her of our time together."

Kazuma gave him a thumbs-up. "Now you’re talking, Ren! A leaf necklace sounds cool and sentimental. You’ve got this."

Yusuke chuckled, giving him a nod of approval. "Not bad, man. Not bad at all. Just make sure you don’t mess up the party, okay? We’ll help you out, but only if there’s good food involved."

Ren grinned, feeling a surge of confidence. "Deal. I’ll handle the necklace, and you two can help me with the party. But no funny business, okay? This is important."

Kazuma and Yusuke saluted in unison, though their mischievous grins told Ren that there was no guarantee of things going smoothly. Still, he was glad to have them on board.
