The Café Between Worlds

Chapter 39: A Taste of Happiness

The golden hues of the setting sun had given way to the cool embrace of twilight as Ren and Kazuha made their way back from the aquarium. Hand in hand, they walked side by side, the ring on Kazuha’s finger glinting in the dim light as she looked at it, a soft smile playing on her lips.

Ren stole glances at her, his heart still heavy with the knowledge of the time they had left. But he didn’t want to think about that. Not now. All he wanted was to give her the perfect day, the perfect memory to hold onto.

“You know,” Kazuha said softly, breaking the comfortable silence between them, “I’ve always wondered what it would be like to come home and cook dinner together... like a married couple.”

Ren’s heart skipped a beat at her words, the image she painted filling him with a bittersweet warmth. “That sounds... perfect,” he replied, his voice gentle. “What do you want to cook?”

Kazuha’s eyes sparkled as she glanced at him, her smile growing wider. “How about hotpot? We used to have it every now and then back at the orphanage. It always felt like a feast.”

Ren chuckled, nodding. “Hotpot it is. We’ll stop by the market on the way back and pick up everything we need.”

They walked through the streets together, hand in hand, their steps light and full of the quiet joy that came from being with each other. The market was bustling with people, and the air was filled with the rich scents of food, spices, and fresh produce.

Kazuha’s eyes scanned the stalls as they walked, her excitement growing as they picked out ingredients for their dinner. She grabbed a basket, tossing vegetables and meat into it with ease, while Ren trailed behind her, smiling at how energized she seemed.

“You’ve gotten better at picking vegetables,” she teased, nudging him playfully with her elbow as she grabbed a bunch of fresh greens.

Ren laughed, shaking his head. “You know, I used to hate vegetables. Couldn’t stand them.”

“Oh, I remember,” Kazuha grinned, her eyes twinkling with mischief. “You used to whine every time we had vegetables back at the orphanage. You were like a little kid.”

Ren scratched the back of his head, embarrassed but laughing. “Yeah, well, you’re the reason I don’t mind them now.”

Kazuha raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. “Oh? How’s that?”

“You remember that one time you made that dish with vegetables, and I didn’t even notice? It was so good that I cleaned my plate, and then you told me afterward it was full of vegetables,” Ren recalled, a sheepish smile on his face.

Kazuha’s laughter rang out, light and joyful. “Oh yeah! I remember that! You were so shocked. I thought you’d refuse to eat it after that, but you didn’t.”

“Yeah, well, you tricked me into liking vegetables,” Ren said, crossing his arms in mock indignation. “I didn’t stand a chance.”

Kazuha giggled, her hand brushing against his as she placed the last of their items into the basket. “I had to get creative to make sure you were eating healthy. You were so picky.”

Ren shook his head with a grin. “Yeah, but look at me now. I eat vegetables willingly.”

“I’m proud of you,” Kazuha teased, her smile never faltering. “It only took you, what, twenty years?”

Ren chuckled as they headed to the register to pay for their groceries. The playful banter between them filled the air with warmth, and for a moment, it felt like they were just an ordinary couple out for a normal evening. No heavy burdens. No ticking clocks. Just the two of them enjoying each other’s company.

When they arrived back at their home—their café—it was already night. The stars dotted the sky above, casting a faint glow over the quiet streets. Ren unlocked the door, and they stepped inside, the familiar scent of the place filling the air.

“Home sweet home,” Kazuha murmured, looking around with a fond smile.

Ren nodded, his heart swelling. “Yeah. Let’s make tonight special.”

They unpacked the groceries, placing the ingredients on the counter. The kitchen was soon filled with the sounds of chopping, slicing, and sizzling as they worked side by side to prepare their hotpot. Ren kept stealing glances at Kazuha as she moved with such ease, her hands skillfully working the vegetables.

“You’re staring,” Kazuha said without looking up, her lips curving into a smile.

Ren blinked, caught off guard. “I... was just admiring your cooking skills.”

Kazuha laughed softly, glancing up at him. “Sure you were.”

Ren chuckled, reaching over to steal a piece of meat from the cutting board. But Kazuha caught his hand, playfully slapping it away.

“Hey! That’s for the hotpot!” she scolded, though her tone was more amused than anything.

Ren grinned, raising his hands in mock surrender. “Fine, fine. I’ll wait.”

They continued cooking together, the playful moments between them filling the air with laughter and joy. Ren loved every second of it—how they worked in sync, how they teased each other like they always had, but now with a deeper sense of closeness.

Once the hotpot was ready, Ren decided to take things up a notch. He quickly set the table, arranging everything with a bit more care than usual. He even lit a couple of candles, casting a soft, romantic glow over the space.

Kazuha noticed the effort and smiled, her heart fluttering. “Trying to turn this into a five-star dinner?”

Ren shrugged, his eyes warm as they met hers. “You deserve nothing less.”

They sat down together, the warmth of the hotpot filling the room as they began to eat. The flavors were rich and comforting, and they shared stories and jokes between bites, their conversation flowing easily.

Kazuha’s eyes sparkled as she looked at Ren, her heart full. “This... this is perfect, Ren. I can’t imagine a better night.”

Ren reached across the table, gently taking her hand in his. “I’m just glad you’re happy, Kazuha. That’s all I want.”

Their fingers intertwined, and for a moment, the world outside faded away. It was just the two of them, wrapped in the warmth of the moment.

After dinner, they moved to the sink, ready to wash the dishes. Ren rolled up his sleeves, grabbing a sponge, while Kazuha turned on the water. As they stood side by side, their elbows brushing, Ren couldn’t help but nudge her playfully.

“You know,” he began, his tone light, “I’ve heard that washing dishes together is supposed to be a bonding experience for couples.”

Kazuha raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile on her lips. “Oh, is that so?”

Ren nodded, trying to keep a straight face. “Yep. Very romantic, actually.”

Kazuha laughed softly, shaking her head. “I don’t know if I’d call this romantic, but I guess it’s better than doing them alone.”

Ren grinned, splashing a bit of water at her. “You’re welcome, then.”

Kazuha gasped, giving him a playful shove. “Ren!”

Ren laughed, but before he could react, Kazuha flicked some water back at him, her eyes twinkling with mischief. “That’s for splashing me.”

“Oh, it’s on now,” Ren declared, grabbing the sponge and flicking more water her way.

They dissolved into laughter, splashing each other like children, the kitchen quickly turning into a playful battleground. Kazuha’s laughter echoed through the space, filling it with life and warmth.

But as they stood there, catching their breath, Ren reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek. The playful atmosphere shifted, replaced with a quiet, intimate moment.

“Kazuha,” he whispered, his thumb brushing softly against her skin.

She looked up at him, her eyes shining with love and affection. “Ren...”

He leaned in, his lips capturing hers in a gentle, tender kiss. The world around them seemed to fall away as they melted into each other, the kiss deepening as their emotions swirled together. It wasn’t just a kiss—it was a promise, a vow that, no matter what happened, they would always have this moment, this love.

When they finally pulled apart, their foreheads resting against each other, Ren smiled softly. “I love you, Kazuha. More than anything.”

Kazuha’s heart swelled, her voice barely a whisper as she replied, “I love you too, Ren. Always.”

And in that moment, with the dishes forgotten and the world outside fading away, they stood together, wrapped in the warmth of their love. It was a love that transcended time, a love that would last beyond the confines of this life and the next.
