Varocia : From Gamer to Mentor

Chapter 17: Mentor (1)

Climbing the ancient, moss-covered stone stairs was a fascinating experience for Olgan. It felt like exploring a forgotten ruin, albeit one bustling with life—people chatted, merchants sold their wares, and sentries from various races stood guard. While most were human, the diversity of races around him was striking.

Ascension Towers, it seemed, were one of the few places where different races could gather and coexist peacefully, if one ignored the hidden restrictions that lingered beneath the surface.

Despite the abundant manpower capable of renovating the tower, it remained untouched, ancient and mysterious, like a relic of a bygone era.

Before long, they reached the top.

In the center, Olgan noticed a blonde-haired female elf undergoing her Ascension. Her elegant attire suggested she was of influential background and possibly high rank, perhaps on her second or third Ascension. However, lacking knowledge of elven culture, he couldn't be certain. Still, he couldn't deny the reputation elves held; their beauty was undeniable, regardless of gender.

The Ascension altar, crafted from beautifully carved stone, resembled the tower itself, flanked by two Greek-style pillars, each supporting a floating, transparent gem, and giving the place an air of ancient magic. Oddly, no moss or plants adorned the altar, making it appear newly built. He wondered if it was cleaned regularly or if the altar itself prevented any growth.

As enchanting BGM filled the air, a small pillar of light descended from the sky, enveloping the female elf in its warm glow. She closed her eyes, bathed in the ethereal light.

After ten seconds, as the pillar dissipated, she slowly opened her eyes, clenched and unclenched her fists to feel her newfound power. She stepped down from the altar, escorted by guards as she descended the tower.

The Ascension process seemed simple and even lackluster. While the first time seeing it was intriguing, he doubted he'd remain captivated for long after seeing it for a second or third time.

Looking around and noticing that no one else was stepping forward, Olex beckoned to Olgan. "It seems no one else is undergoing Ascension. It's your turn."

Olgan glanced at Edith, who nodded encouragingly.

He took a moment to consider his options before allocating his Attribute Points: 6 into INT, 1 each into DEX, PER, and WIS, with the last point going into VIT for a slight boost in survivability.

While Olex hadn't mentioned that the Mentor Class required DEX, he felt it was a good choice. As a teacher, paperwork would be inevitable, and he might need to handle gadgets or tools for his lessons, making a little DEX beneficial.

"What do I need to do?" he asked.

Edith replied, "Just stand in the middle of the ancient magic circle. The Voice of the World will guide you from there."

Olgan nodded, walking to the altar and positioning himself in the center of the ancient magic circle. He closed his eyes, allowing the enchanting BGM to fill his senses as he waited.

Soon, the same light pillar descended upon him, and he heard a stream of gibberish from the Voice of the World that he somehow understood perfectly.

[Level 10... condition met]

[Calculating possible Classes for your Ascension...]

[Please select the Class you wish to ascend to:]

1. Worlds Observer (Legendary) (Condition: Catch a glimpse of something that doesn't belong to this world)

2. Fate's Reader (Epic) (Condition: Shift the outcome of someone with significant fate)

3. Medium (Rare) (Condition: Potential of SPR exceeding 10)

4. Actor (Uncommon) (Condition: Make someone believe your acting was real)

5. Mentor (Common) (Condition: Teaching someone new knowledge)

6. Hoarder (Common) (Condition: Never spend any Attribute Points until Level 10)

His breath hitched as he examined the options.

Worlds Observer... Could that mean I might be able to see my family and friends from Earth again? The name hinted that it might lead to advanced Classes like Worlds Walker or Worlds Traveler. He lingered on that option, unable to tear his gaze away.

But in the end, he sighed and accepted reality, surrendering the fantasy of becoming a Worlds Observer. Such a Class would undoubtedly be fraught with danger. It's essentially a Class for Protagonist! Olgan was not a delusional person; he was just a simple gamer before this transmigration. The likelihood of dying before advancing into something like Worlds Traveler was far too high.

There was also the risk of how Edith and the others would react if they learned he chose a Class like Worlds Observer. Though they appeared friendly now, he feared their priorities might shift upon discovering his choice.

Someone might have a way to identify his Class even without him saying anything, be it by using Skills or Items.

Fate's Reader was similarly dangerous. Knowing the future could lead to his demise—what if he saw what he shouldn't? Then he might not even know how he would die.

The Medium Class was tempting, yet it came with its own risks; he couldn't trust that any spirit he communicated with wouldn't bring him doom.

Actor was decent, but he had no desire to pursue acting. He assumed he got this Class as a choice because of his acting with Lenna to help Edith learned [Rage].

Hoarder felt like the least appealing option of all.

Ultimately, he was left with Mentor, the path he originally intended to take. Olgan sighed, smiled wryly and swiftly selected Mentor, fearing he might change his mind later if he hesitated longer.

As a certain Glock Saint once said, "Hesitation is defeat."

With a third sigh, he felt drained, watching the first option fade away, never to return.

He comforted himself, Thinking positively, this doesn't mean I have zero chance of finding a similar Class later. Perhaps I can uncover one on the path of Mentor when I reach higher levels and have enough strength to protect myself.

[Congratulations on your 1st Ascension: Mentor]

As the Voice of the World gradually faded, he felt a rush of energy return to his body. Slowly, he opened his eyes to see Edith smiling and waving at him, while surprisingly, Lenna who waited below had a smile curving her lips, visible enough for him to see even from far away.

He nodded at them and called up two Interfaces: "Status" and "Skill Panel."

Two blue holograms appeared, overlaying each other. He pulled the Status panel to the top first and began examining it.

His eyes scanned his newly increased Stats, a sense of satisfaction washing over him. His Potential INT had seen a significant boost, likely a result of Lenna's feedback while teaching Edith about [Rage]. His WIS had also increased slightly, but the rise wasn't as pronounced as INT. That made sense; his Potential WIS had been relatively high to begin with, making further increases more challenging.

"What's this?" His gaze landed on the newly acquired title, [Weight of Decisions]. Curiosity piqued, he physically tapped on both [Weight of Decisions] and his Class, Mentor, with his finger.
