Chapter 6
Shen Nian's colleague listened with a thumping heart: “I feel it’s very likely. Who would keep calling an empty number?”
While they were still discussing whether Shen Nian really had a mental problem, a young nurse rushed over, anxiety written all over her face, speaking in a panicked tone:
“There’s an accident with the patient in Bed 23!”
The two nurses who were chatting leisurely instantly changed expressions.

After taking the sleeping pills, Shen Nian slept very soundly. It had been a long time since she had such a sweet sleep, without any dreams to disturb her, and she slept until she woke up naturally.
As she opened her eyes, the first thing that entered her sight was the ceiling of the hospital room. Shen Nian stared at the white surface for quite a while.
No wonder everyone advises having adequate sleep. The feeling of sleeping full is really comfortable.
There was still some pain in her abdomen, but she could ignore it.
Wanting to stretch, she then realized someone was holding her hand.
Shen Nian turned her head. A man was grasping her hand, sleeping very soundly with his head on her hospital bed.
She recognized who it was just by the hair. She was surprised to see him appear here, eyes flashing a hint of astonishment.
Before Shen Nian could retrieve her hand or speak, her slight movement had already woken up the man.
Xiao Mubai, who stayed by her side the whole night, only managed to doze off for the second half. Although he was resting, he remained alert, so he immediately woke up when Shen Nian stirred slightly.
As he opened his eyes, he saw Shen Nian looking at him.
Seeing it was indeed Xiao Mubai, Shen Nian was surprised: “Why are you here?”
“You woke up!” Xiao Mubai instantly became alert, anxiously asking: “Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere? I’ll call the doctor right now!”
Saying so, not giving Shen Nian a chance to speak, he immediately pressed the call bell beside them.
The doctor who had been waiting outside hurried in as soon as he heard the call bell, first giving Shen Nian an examination.
Following the doctor, two other people also came in. One was Dr. Kong whom Shen Nian had met before, the other a man in his forties. The two stood at the side, one lowering his head silently while the other had an anxious look.
Shen Nian was somewhat puzzled.
Seeing the doctor put away the examination equipment, the middle-aged man beside Dr. Kong hurriedly asked nervously: “How is it? No issues right!”
The doctor told the middle-aged man: “Dean, she’s fine. She only just had an abortion, so her body is relatively weak.”
“That’s good, that’s good.”
Only then did the man addressed as “Dean” heave a sigh of relief.
After helping with Shen Nian’s checkup, the doctor left the ward, but the middle-aged man and Dr. Kong did not leave. The middle-aged man bowed deeply towards Shen Nian.
“Miss Shen, I’m Li, the dean of Hospital No.1. I’m truly sorry. It was negligence on our hospital’s doctors that led to this incident.”
Shen Nian was somewhat lost. She turned her head to look at Xiao Mubai beside her. Xiao Mubai explained to her:
“You were on the verge of death yesterday.”
“?”
Shen Nian knew she was sent to the hospital yesterday due to massive bleeding, but it wasn’t that serious right? Also...what did it have to do with the hospital?
Seeing her still unaware of how grave the situation was, Xiao Mubai, who was always gentle, lost his temper for the first time: “After drinking so much and taking sleeping pills, were you that determined to die?!”
Hearing Xiao Mubai speak like that, Shen Nian understood what had happened.
No wonder Dr. Kong had such a guilty look. After all, the sleeping pills she took were prescribed by Dr. Kong.
Li Dean bowed again to apologize: “This incident was due to our negligence. We will fire the doctors involved and all of Miss Shen’s medical fees during hospitalization will be waived. Furthermore, we will cover all of Miss Shen’s nutrition expenses. As long as Miss Shen is willing to settle this privately, any requests or compensation, just state them and our hospital will do our best to meet them.”
What happened yesterday was severe negligence by their hospital’s doctors who prescribed sleeping pills to a patient who had just drunk alcohol, leading to the incident. If this matter was made known, it would greatly impact their hospital’s reputation.
Luckily it didn’t happen during the daytime. There weren’t many people in the hospital at night. The inpatients were also resting at that time, so apart from the emergency doctors and some nurses, those who knew about this incident had been personally instructed by Li Dean to keep quiet.
Now they were apologizing to Shen Nian and willing to bear the treatment costs, hoping that she would not pursue liability.
Upon hearing this, Shen Nian was stunned for a moment. After taking the pills yesterday, she had lost all memory about subsequent happenings. She had no impressions whatsoever of what happened later.
Seeing Shen Nian remain silent, Li Dean thought she wanted to blow up the matter and became anxious. He turned his head to glare fiercely at Dr. Kong, scolding: “What are you standing there for?! Hurry and apologize! Do you know you almost caused someone’s death?!”
Dr. Kong stepped forward two steps, head lowered guiltily as she kept apologizing: “Miss Shen, I’m sorry. It was me who prescribed medication without ascertaining the situation properly. It’s all my fault, please don’t blow this matter up...”
Li Dean hurriedly echoed beside her: “Yes, yes. As long as Miss Shen is willing to settle this privately, any requests will do.”
Li Dean was already prepared to be slaughtered. But he then heard Shen Nian say:
“It’s alright, I won’t pursue this.”
Li Dean was stunned upon hearing that. This was his first time encountering a patient who didn’t pursue the hospital’s liability after an incident. “Miss Shen?”
Shen Nian wanted to sit up. Xiao Mubai immediately understood her intention and raised the hospital bed.
Leaning against it was much more comfortable than lying down. Xiao Mubai also placed a pillow at her waist for extra cushioning to make her more comfortable sitting.
Compared to her frighteningly pale complexion when she was sent in yesterday, after sleeping for one night, her complexion had improved by a lot, though she still looked very haggard.
Looking at Li Dean and Dr. Kong, Shen Nian said: “It was me who didn’t state my condition clearly when asking Dr. Kong for sleeping pills.”
Dr. Kong wasn’t yesterday’s emergency doctor, so she only knew that Shen Nian was sent to the ER for massive bleeding after an abortion. She didn’t know Shen Nian had drank alcohol. After the emergency treatment, she had changed into patient robes, so the smell of alcohol on her was much fainter.
“It was my own problem. I won’t pursue the hospital’s liability. Please don’t fire Dr. Kong too, Dean Li.”
“Yes, yes.” Afraid that she would change her mind, upon hearing Shen Nian speak so amiably, Li Dean hurriedly agreed.
“Then...I won’t disturb Miss Shen’s rest. If anything, press the call bell. Our doctors and nurses are on standby at all times.”
“Alright, thanks.”
Li Dean heaved a huge sigh of relief and was about to leave. Dr Kong also had an expression of surviving a catastrophe.
Watching Dr. Kong’s departing back, Shen Nian contemplated for two seconds before calling out to stop her.
“Dr. Kong.”
Dr. Kong halted her steps and turned back to look at Shen Nian. “Miss Shen?”
Shen Nian gave her a faint smile. “Thank you for your concern.”
Dr. Kong was stunned for a moment, subconsciously replying: “You’re welcome...”
Watching Dr. Kong leave, Xiao Mubai beside them knitted his brows, somewhat puzzled. “She almost caused your death yet you’re thanking her?”
Shen Nian withdrew her gaze. “It was my problem.” Xiao Mubai still wore a very solemn expression.
