My Enigmatic Life

Volume Six, Prologue: The Day Job

Well, I am once again at The Hisakawa residence. It's quite the ways away from both my apartment building and Oji's house, but not too far from where my god-parents are. Nevermind that for now, what I really want to remark on is how huge it is. The Hisakawa residence is actually a temple, with a torii gate and a massive staircase. I can't help but wonder how many rooms it must have.

Stopping at the front door, I pull on the bell rope beside me, causing a sublime yet hefty gong to reverberate in my ears. In a tick or two, the door slides open.

"Ah, welcome back, Colen-san."

"Good afternoon, Mrs.Hisakawa."

The one who opens the door is Mrs.Hisakawa, Hisakawa-san's mum. She has a round, soft face that somehow immediately makes you feel welcome, and auburn hair that's about the same length as Akane's. As for her eyes, well I can't tell you anything about them, because they're completely obscured her bangs. She assures me that she can see through them, though. Like mother, like daughter in that case, although Hisakawa-san's bangs are far less thick.

"Please come in, my daughter is expecting you."

"I'm sure..."

You might not be able to tell due to my boundless enthusiasm, but the lesson with Hisakawa-san didn't go too well. I'd say it was akin to crashing full-force into a wall made out of lead, and somehow surviving, only to be left in complete and utter agony.

I enter the room where Hisakawa-san is, where she's sat with her legs under the kotatsu. Upon seeing me, she frowns slightly, but greets me with respect nonetheless.

"Good afternoon, Colen-san."

"Good afternoon."

She's upset with me because I got peeved off by just how bad she was yesterday. I would say that she's on the level of a baby, but newborns around the world would be highly offended.

"Did you finish up the work I gave you?", I ask.

"Of course."

Hisakawa-san elegantly pulls out a sheet of paper and hands it to me. You see, I gave her a list of words to jot down to help her with her spell-I can't read this. I'm not even being hyperbolic, I genuinely can-not read anything on this piece of paper.

"Hisakawa-san, what is this?", I ask carefully.

"That's the list of words that you wanted me to spell.", she replies.

Bloody Nora.

"Well, what about the oral training? Can you manage to say hello yet?"

Hisakawa-san's dignified vibe fades as she looks away from me entirely.

"I believe Haha-ue will be bringing us tea soon. Do you like dango, Colen-san?"

I bury my face in my hands with defeat. It's going to be a long two hours, isn't it?
