“What truth?” Sasuke asked confused

“Do you really think that Itachi massacred his own clan?”

“Yes. He is a traitor of the Uchiha clan.”

“Yes. He is a traitor of the Uchiha clan.” Sasuke frowned at this.

“But he’s not a traitor of Konoha.”

“Explain.” Sasuke asked angrily.

“Let’s start at the beginning. Konoha was founded by the Senju clan and the Uchiha clan together. The position of the  Hokage was promised to Madara Uchiha, but the other clans favored Hashirama Senju so he was forced to accept the position of Hokage.”

“What has anything got to do with Itachi?” Sasuke asked irritated.

“Don’t interrupt. Your mother didn’t want you to know this so I’m already doing you a favour by telling you this. After Hashirama became the Hokage, Madara left the village. He asked his clan to fight again but his clanmates were tired of the fighting. They didn’t support him and disappointed he left the village.” I started the history lesson.

“After some time he returned with the nine tails. The mangekyou of the Uchiha clan allows them to control the tailed beasts. After a long fight, Hashirama killed Madara, his friend, and sealed the nine tails. Man, if Hashirama was a Uchiha, he would surely have awakened his mangekyou after the death of Madara.

Further, the nine tails was minding his own business and got controlled and sealed. Talk about bad luck. Anyhow, after the death of Madara, the same clanmates who refused to fight or leave the village felt guilty for his death. But Hashirama also died shortly after the battle. This led to the first Ninja war. But Tobirama Senju took over Hashirama and became the second hokage.

To prevent the emergence of a second Madara Uchiha, he established the Konoha Police Force.”

“Tobirama Senju established Konoha Police Force?”

“Yes. Uchiha clan evolves their sharingan with intense emotions. He hoped that by reducing the casualties of Uchiha on the battlefield, he could prevent the rise of another Madara. He saw that the Uchiha were agitated. They were ridden with guilt at the death of Madara. But things hadn't turned too bad at this point.

Tobirama put the Uchiha in charge of the police force for two reasons. First, he wanted to reduce the number of mangekyou and second, to keep a close eye on them. He also cautioned his students. The third hokage and the leader of root Danzo Shimura took his teachings to the extreme.”

“What do you mean extreme?”

“While Tobirama just wanted to prevent the rise of another Madara, his students wanted to eliminate this problem. The problem was that there was no way to remove the Uchiha clan without other clans rebelling after all, nothing could guarantee that their clan would not be next. And here came the problem. The third hokage ever the hypocrite let his old teammate take care of it.

Due to the establishment of the Konoha Police Force, there was a rift between the village and the Uchiha. The villagers were scared that they could be arrested anytime but the arrogant Uchiha didn’t bother to remove the misunderstanding. This allowed Danzo to spread fear of the Uchiha among the villagers.

Then came the Kyubi incident. On that day someone with Sharingan controlled the Kyubi when my mother was about to give birth and my father died because of it. But people conveniently ignored that the place where my mother was about to give birth was confidential and only a few people were supposed to know the location.

In fact, I’ve confirmed that Danzo leaked the location. The root then blocked the Uchiha from rescuing the villagers and the distrust between the villagers and the Uchiha grew. And there was no way for the Uchiha to defend themselves. The root is not official so there are no records of such order and Hiruzen would not have allowed this to come out. Combined with the fact that the Kyubi was controlled by mangekyou planted a seed of distrust.”

“Then why did Itachi kill our clan? Shouldn’t it be the Hokage?”

“That is another tale altogether. The Uchiha wanted someone from their clan to become the Hokage since the establishment of Konoha. But after the Kyubi incident, their chance of becoming the Hokage became almost zero. Being suppressed by the higher ups, the clan members wanted to revolt despite the objections of your father. Although he was the leader of the clan, that could have easily changed.

So he planted Itachi in Ambu to be a spy. But that was one of his biggest mistakes. You see, two individuals could think about the village as a whole instead of just the clan. Most of the Uchiha decided to join the KPF instead of the three man squad. But Itachi and Shisui were different. They thought about the village as a whole. Quite naïve if you ask me. If the village had good intentions, the situation would never have escalated.

Shisui had awakened his mangekyou which could cast a genjutsu so strong that a person’s will would be changed without his knowledge. He told the Hokage and Danzo that he could change the will of the Uchiha. But this was not what they had planned. They also didn’t want any individual with such power to be present.

So Danzo called him in the guise of a meeting and then injured him and stole his eye. Itachi arrived and saved him but Shisui still killed himself and entrusted his remaining eye to Itachi and asked him not to avenge him as that would escalate the situation.

The problem was that Itachi was a sensitive child. He awakened his sharingan by simply seeing the battlefield at the age of four. He often asked people the meaning of life. But the death of his friend hit him hard.

As the tension rose and the Uchiha clan was getting ready for the rebellion, Hiruzen told Itachi to buy more time for him to negotiate with the Uchiha clan. But this was a plot to gain the trust of Itachi. After Itachi left he was called by Danzo.

He gave Itachi two choices, either fight with his clan and be killed alongside everyone, or kill everyone by his own hands. The second proposal will allow one person to be spared, the last remaining Uchiha, the only person Itachi could never hurt, his brother Sasuke.”

“That’s not true. Mom and Izumi nee also survived.” Sasuke started to throw a tantrum.

“I would get nothing by lying to you. Also, both of them survived because I sensed something was about to happen. I knew you were in the academy as was my shadow clone. So I asked mom to invite those two. Even then Itachi tried to kill them but the seals stopped him. It was actually going to happen either way. You see a rebellion would cause a major loss to Konoha. And the leaders could not attack before being attacked. And they didn’t want the entire clan to be wiped out due to the value of sharingan. They wanted someone who they could control.

So Itachi took it on himself and with the help of an unknown individual killed all his clanmates. He is still working as a spy for Konoha. The only reason he came to the village was to remind the elders that he was still alive so they couldn’t touch you, not that they were going to. Maybe Danzo would have made you join root and placed a cursed seal on you and brainwashed you but even he couldn’t kill you.

But I took care of Danzo, so that was not going to happen. Plus Tsunade would not have allowed that to happen as the same thing happened to her clan, just in a less subtle way. Somewhere along the way, the hunger for power grew so much that the student of the second Hokage didn’t even spare his clan.”

“I’m still leaving.” Sasuke said after some time.

“As I said, I’m not here to stop you. You have your own path to follow. I only came to inform you what had actually happened and to stop you from doing something you would come to regret. I don’t want to fight you, but I’ll do everything to keep the people close to me safe. So I hope you don’t think about destroying the village because both the clan and the village were at fault.” He looked at me shocked.

“Don’t give me that look. My clan was also destroyed by the actions of the village and I too wanted to destroy it. So I know what you are going through. My advice is for you to become strong enough to prevent future tragedies.”

“I will.” He replied with conviction and started to leave the village.

“Oh and remember to ask the location of Orochimaru from those four because I would be hunting them down. You are my friend but they are fair game.” I said with a grin. Although I didn’t like Sasuke, I couldn’t kill my future step-son.

With a last look, Sasuke departed the village with the sound four. What he didn’t know was that I marked him. Now I would be aware of his location at all times.
