The Witcher: Wolf School’s Hunting Notes

90. The Fall of the Wolf School.

Allen looked towards the voice. The Witcher Master with graying hair, seated at the first position to the right of the head, smiled at him. The satisfaction in his eyes made Allen feel a sudden discomfort.

He called out "Master Allen," but his tone was condescending.

He's not someone like Vesemir or the headmaster who had been kind to him, so why did he speak to him in such a manner?

Why…

Wait, why am I thinking this way?

Allen frowned, sensing that something was amiss. At that moment, a cool sensation flowed into his mind, purging some murky thoughts and clearing his head.

"It's the Mirage Pearl!" Allen thought.

So, there is something wrong!

The Witcher Master had only said one sentence, yet Allen's emotions had fluctuated too intensely. As a newcomer, being acknowledged and praised by veterans of the organization should have made him happy, shouldn't it?

"Why have I become so… so arrogant?" Allen wondered.

Yes!

Arrogant!

With the abnormality pinpointed, the remaining irritation in his heart dissipated.

"Not bad, Master Allen. Besides the headmaster, you are the quickest among us to break free from the influence of the Sound of Glory," the graying Witcher Master said, his smile more sincere.

"Sound of Glory?" Allen asked curiously.

The Witcher Master patiently explained: "Yes, the Sound of Glory. It's a magical artifact from the days of the Witcher Order that can manifest a witcher's glory."

"Its side effect makes one arrogant, but sometimes, we find this effect quite useful."

"It helps you see yourself clearly."

Allen pondered over this. A witcher's glory lies in the powerful monsters they've slain, which explains why he heard the drowner and the Old Speartip's voices.

So. this should be the final test for qualifying as a Witcher Master of the Wolf School.

But a magical artifact?

Why didn't his wolf medallion react?

Allen instinctively touched his chest.

"The school medallion is not infallible."

"There are many ways to bypass detection tools."

A cold female voice sounded. Allen turned to look.

The sorceress leaned against a shadowed corner. Seeing him look over, she nodded slightly and continued to explain: "Apart from the Sound of Glory, all other magical items are disabled here."

But my Mirage Pearl still works!

Allen thought.

Could it be that magical spirits are unaffected?

But the wolf medallion is also a magical spirit, so why didn't it work?

Although questions arose in his mind, some were obviously inappropriate to ask here. So, he looked gratefully at Lady Vira, then glanced at the empty seats, preparing to ask where he should sit. Though he didn't know why the sorceress was standing, since the Witcher Masters had allowed Allen in, there must be a place for him.

"Tap~"

Vesemir, seeing this, patted Allen's shoulder and indicated he should sit beside Danthe.

Once they were seated, the regular meeting of the Wolf School Masters began. As the meeting progressed, Allen gradually gained a deeper understanding of the Wolf School. Unlike the strictly organized armed group he had imagined when he first came to this world, the Wolf School was not a tightly knit organization.

The school's main functions were training apprentices for trials, assisting witchers who had lost their combat abilities, and liaising with kings and nobles for gifts and such. It did not involve accepting monster contracts or organizing monster hunts.

Kaer Morhen was just a place for witchers to huddle together. Once a witcher passed the trial, they became a free individual. They could stay with the school or leave. Even if they stayed, there was no hierarchy among members, only bonds of friendship and mentorship. Of course, witchers rarely resisted the school's arrangements.

So the meeting went on for about an hour without a single piece of information interesting to Allen, only "trivial matters" like finances. These matters, though crucial to an organization, did nothing to change the Wolf School's fate in the short term. Moreover, these matters had nothing to do with him, who had just become a Witcher Master.

"Snore~ Snore~"

Suddenly, loud snoring arose.

Allen looked and saw Master Danthe sprawled on the table, his back rising and falling as he slept soundly. Feeling drowsy from the monotonous meeting, Allen noticed that only four people at the long table were still awake.

The headmaster, Vesemir, Allen, and the white-haired old witcher White. Vesemir's eyes were vacant, his mind wandering. Allen's state had been similar before.

White was responsible for the school's financial report. The only one truly listening was the headmaster. Allen glanced at the headmaster, whose expression remained unchanged, as if he was used to this.

"Even in a supernatural world, meetings are always dull and boring," Allen thought.

Listening to the rising and falling snores around him, he too felt a bit sleepy.

Until…

"Headmaster, the King of Kaedwen's gift from last year was delayed for a long time, and this year's hasn't arrived yet. Is there a problem?"

Hmm? King of Kaedwen?

Allen immediately perked up and listened closely.

"The king's gift will not come!"

The headmaster said flatly. He glanced at the attentive Allen and then around. The Witcher Masters' sleeping postures were varied. After stopping White from asking further questions, the headmaster sighed, made a barely discernible hand gesture with his right hand, and lightly tapped the long table.

"Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!"

The long table vibrated at an extremely high frequency.

The loud buzzing made Allen feel as if his bones were vibrating with the table.

"Is this the Aard Sign?"

Seeing this anomaly, Allen couldn't help but marvel. The headmaster's gesture was quick, but not beyond recognition. But wasn't the Aard Sign supposed to emit a forward shockwave?

This… this sign had no such vibrating attribute.

And the gentle tapping, so casual and fluid.

How was it done?

"This is the Aard Sign, just some trivial, meaningless little application!"

The sorceress's cold voice sneered from the corner. The headmaster smiled helplessly at her words, not refuting. The tedious meeting had almost made Allen forget the sorceress was still here.

After a slight shock, Allen refocused on the headmaster's words.

"The king's gift will not come, so the Kaedwen Royal Decree is behind the defense battle of Kaer Morhen?"

"No, with so little information, I can't conclude that."

Allen touched his chin, pondering while the Witcher Masters woke one after another. After a few moments of confusion, they all looked at the headmaster. Only the headmaster of the Wolf School could wake them this way.

The headmaster, his expression grave, glanced at Allen before solemnly saying: "Gentlemen, the Wolf School is about to fall!"

The Witcher Masters: "Huh?"
