The Witcher: Wolf School’s Hunting Notes

91. Stuck in a Deadlock.

Huh?

How long did they sleep for?

How could the school be destroyed after just one nap?

The witcher masters rubbed their faces and eyes. They looked around, but there was no fire. They glanced outside the window; the sky was clear with no dragons flying by. Wait, even if there was a dragon invasion, it would only add to the chief's achievements. The witcher masters turned back.

The chief's face was still gloomy and serious. The masters knew he wasn't one to joke around.

Could the Wolf School really be finished?

But for what reason? It couldn't just be because they took a short nap, right?

The witcher masters exchanged glances, their eyes darting from Allen to the grumpy old White, then to the only one not looking sleepy, Vesemir. Vesemir felt a chill down his spine under the sudden focused gazes. Even though he didn't know anything, to save face in front of his apprentice, he solemnly shook his head.

"Whoa~"

The room erupted in noise.

"What's going on, Vesemir? Is there a monster? An evil god?"

The recently awakened masters were truly panicked, their confused and loud questions echoing in the room. True to their status as masters, their snoring was loud, and even their panicked shouts were particularly powerful.

"Enough."

A deep, steady voice rang out, and everyone settled down.

"The Wolf School is indeed on the verge of destruction, but it's not happening now, and it's not beyond saving."

Hearing the chief's still steady tone, the witcher masters exchanged glances.

After a moment of silence, Danthe hit the core of the issue.

"Who is our enemy?"

The chief shook his head, hesitated for a moment, then said:

"That's still unclear."

The witcher masters were puzzled.

How could they be on the brink of destruction without knowing who the enemy was?

Could the chief be losing his mind?

Danthe scratched his head and asked, "Then where did you get this information? How did you know the Wolf School is doomed?"

As he spoke, Danthe seemed to remember something and glanced furtively at the dark corner of the room.

"It's related to Vera, but the information didn't come directly from her."

The chief noticed Danthe's little gesture and cast a barely noticeable glance at Allen, saying: "It came from a prophetic dream. Kaer Morhen will be overrun by mobs and mages, with only a tenth of the witchers surviving the war."

"Whose prophetic dream?" White quickly asked.

The chief shook his head and stared at White, saying: "The seer didn't want to reveal their name, but the omens of the prophetic dream have already appeared."

Omens?

White was momentarily stunned, then suddenly had an epiphany, saying: "Is it the King of Kaedwen, Henselt?"

"What?" Everyone exclaimed, their hearts sinking.

Being hated by the king of the country where the school is located is more despairing than a dragon invasion.

On one hand, The Great Sea Fortress is in Kaedwen, and the Blue Mountains are difficult to cross. The supplies for Kaer Morhen almost all come from the surrounding villages. The witchers at the Great Sea Fortress are familiar with the villagers, but if the King of Kaedwen issued a decree, the local nobles wouldn't oppose the king for a group of witchers.

The king wouldn't even need to take action, and the witchers wouldn't be able to stay at Kaer Morhen. On the other hand, Witchers are powerful, but their strength and weapons are aimed at monsters. Against fully armored, well-trained, highly skilled knights.

They could handle one-on-three, but one-on-ten, one-on-a-hundred?

Not to mention the vast numbers of militia.

How could the fifty or sixty witchers of the Wolf School fight back?

Lastly, The Wolf School is just a place for witchers to huddle together for warmth.

When disaster strikes, how many would really have the will to fight? How many would be willing to stay?

After all, with the way witchers are selected through trials, how many really have feelings for Kaer Morhen?

When war breaks out, being picked off one by one is predictable even without a prophetic dream.

"It's not as bad as it seems..."

Even the resolute witcher masters were disheartened by one piece of news. Seeing this, the chief sighed. The witcher masters raised their heads, their eyes filled with hope.

The chief hesitated for a moment. He explained how the king had sent the sorcerer of Ban Ard as an emissary, and how Allen had discovered the sorcerer's spying on Kaer Morhen's defenses.

The witchers exchanged glances again.

"So the enemy isn't just the King of Kaedwen, but also the Ban Ard sorcerers?"

Danthe thoughtfully voiced his thoughts.

The witcher masters' faces grew darker.

One king could overrun the Great Sea Fortress, let alone dozens of sorcerers. How could they fight back?

The chief remained silent; he hadn't figured out the crux of the matter either. The sorceress had only returned to Kaer Morhen yesterday and hadn't had time to think, but she wasn't too worried.

In the Wolf School, she only cared about Allen. If it came to it, she would just teleport him away.

With her around, where in the world couldn't they go? Who would dare to harm Allen?

"If that's the case, why hasn't the king attacked already?"

"With the king's army and the sorcerers' magic, they should easily destroy Kaer Morhen. What are they hesitating for?"

While everyone was confused, Allen suddenly spoke. Everyone turned to look at the newly appointed witcher master. A moment of realization dawned on them.

Yes, if it were that easy to destroy us, why wait?

The chief suddenly remembered a letter that had arrived a few days ago. He glanced at Allen and said: "On the vernal equinox, Henselt wants to hold a tournament between the apprentices of the Wolf School and the Cat School, and he's invited me to discuss eliminating the elves."

"He has also tested my attitude towards the elves several times."

"It seems he wants us to add the elves to the Wolf School's hunting list."

A tournament for apprentices?

Apprentices who haven't passed the Trial of the Grasses and the Trial of the Mountains can't leave Kaer Morhen, so apprentices must refer to me and Hughes?

Allen was the only one personally involved, so he focused on the tournament. The others thought the key issue was the elves, ignoring the chief's first statement. After all, a tournament for apprentices didn't reveal much. It could just be a trap or an excuse by the king.

Vesemir thought of something and looked thoughtfully at Allen, asking: "Danthe, didn't you also mention Henselt's war with the elves when you returned?"

Danthe was taken aback and said: "Yes...yes, Henselt declared war on the elves, accusing them of stealing his jewels."

"And on the way back, I encountered the king's guards and sorcerers—probably from Ban Ard. They seemed to be looking for someone."

Pausing, Danthe asked in confusion: "But what does the war between Henselt and the elves have to do with our current predicament?"

"Does he want the witchers of the Wolf School to be his militia?"

"Wouldn't we die even faster?"

"Moreover..."

Danthe stopped, looking around. The witcher masters all simultaneously thought of the same thing. The Wolf School maintains neutrality. It's their creed, an oath they can't change even in death, a lesson left by the Witcher Order.

They could never follow Henselt's orders to hunt elves. Thus, the conflict with Henselt seemed irreconcilable. The meeting fell into a deadlock once more.
