Chapter 7: Recruitment, The Guardian Knight

Chapter 7: Recruitment, The Guardian Knight

Back at the castle, Ryan was handed over to servants, who promptly began his treatment.

An hour later, Ryan slowly awakened from his sleep. The luxurious bed beneath him felt strangely uncomfortable, and the aroma in the room made his throat involuntarily gulp.

“Gulp!”

Instinctively, his throat moved. But when he fully took in his surroundings, he was startled and quickly jumped up, his expression one of confusion.

He found himself in a lavish room, filled with items beyond his imagination. Even a single item could not be afforded by selling everything he owned.

What startled him even more was that he was dressed in splendid attire—clothes he had only seen on nobles from a distance. Each item was said to be purchasable only with silver coins.

In his entire life, he had only seen iron coins, and even copper coins had been a rarity three years ago. The thought of silver coins was beyond his wildest dreams.

In his state of panic, a soft creak announced the entrance of a servant.

“Uh, um…”

Ryan stammered, unsure of what to say.

“Please don’t be nervous! Young Master Thor wishes for you to eat before meeting him,” the servant said kindly.

Hearing the servant's respectful words, Ryan felt as though he were dreaming. He then noticed the table beside him, laden with a feast of food, far surpassing the inedible black bread he was used to. This meal was exquisite, including various meats.

“Gulp!”

His throat moved again instinctively. Driven by hunger, Ryan hesitated only briefly before starting to eat.

The food was delicious. Tears welled up in his eyes, which he struggled to suppress. He ate quickly, not savoring the rich fare as he might have otherwise, spurred by the servant’s words.

After finishing, he followed the servant to meet Thor.

In the training ground, Thor practiced his knightly skills. Becoming an Apprentice Knight did not mean the end of his training. Continued exercise and accumulation of Life Source Energy were crucial to advancing further, even though Thor had an inherent advantage.

Next to him was Knight Commander Michael. Observing Thor's practice, Michael was somewhat surprised. He knew Thor well from previous years, where his talent had seemed average. To see him advance so rapidly to an Apprentice Knight was unexpected.

“Seems like Young Master Thor has really grown up!” Michael remarked.

As Michael observed, his gaze shifted toward the approaching figures of Ryan and the servant. However, Michael paid little attention after a quick glance.

Thor noticed Ryan too, but he continued his practice without interruption.

“Young Master Thor, your knightly skills are now highly proficient. With continued practice, you should have a chance to advance to a official knight within ten years!” Michael said with a smile.

“Thank you, Uncle Michael, for your guidance!” Thor replied, acknowledging Michael’s words without much concern. He was aware of his own abilities.

Thor then turned his attention to Ryan and the servant.

“Master Thor!”

“Sir!”

The servant and Ryan addressed him.

“Good, it seems you’re recovering well!” Thor said with a smile, pleased with Ryan's current appearance. Ryan, dressed in noble attire, with golden curls and lively eyes, looked refined, a far cry from his previous disheveled state.

“Sir!” Ryan instinctively spoke but struggled to find the right words.

“Would you like to become my guardian knight?” Thor asked directly, offering to teach Ryan the ways of a knight.

In this near-medieval era, there was no need for elaborate schemes to win loyalty. The fact that Thor was a noble and Ryan was a commoner already conveyed much.

Michael was also somewhat surprised by this development.

Ryan’s head shot up, eyes wide with shock and delight at Thor’s offer.

“Sir!”

Ryan’s heart raced with excitement. Although he was a commoner, he was well aware of what being a knight entailed.

“That’s if you’re willing.”

Thor’s smile remained as he addressed Ryan, noting his astonishment.

“Yes!”

“I am willing!”

“Sir, I swear by the Life Goddess to be a loyal guardian knight to you!” Ryan pledged, and a green light enveloped the room. A diamond-shaped mark appeared on his forehead, signifying his vow to the Life Goddess.

In this world, the light of the Life Goddess's blessing responded to such oaths, and Ryan's vow marked his genuine acceptance of the role.

Thor, surprised but pleased, smiled. Everything was going more smoothly than he had anticipated. At that moment, Ryan truly became his guardian knight.

The Guardian Contract, witnessed by life and loyalty, could only be formed by those with sincere devotion. It was voluntary and could not be coerced.

Once established, it meant that Ryan had become Thor’s most faithful knight.

“Ha ha ha, excellent!”

“From today onward, you are my guardian knight, and my first guardian knight!”

“Uncle Michael, could you please take some time in the coming days to teach Ryan?”

Thor smiled and turned to Michael, making a request.

“Of course!” Michael hesitated only briefly before agreeing after a glance at Ryan.
