Chapter 27.2: Sibling? (SS)

After the day that Alice found Alfonso touching her hands to reassure her of her nightmares, her cheeks couldn’t help but burn red while thinking about it. Her heart raced as she felt how kind Alfonso was to her. So… she decided to set out for a walk in order to calm her mind up, but as she did that. She came across Mary who was standing outside of the garden in the early morning. Alice who spotted the beautiful maid then got nervous because she remembered Alfonso. If Mary is present, then the immediate answer is that Alfonso could also be present. However, the boy she was looking for was nowhere to be found. Alice then walked towards Mary who was just silently watching the sky with a peaceful face on her.

“Uhmm…”

Alice let out a meek voice, Mary then slowly turned her head to look the white-haired girl in the eyes. “Is Lord brother with you?” Mary who heard her question then replied, “He’s not, he ordered me to rest today.” Alice who heard Mary’s response then sighed in relief, because for some reason she is nervous when Alfonso is present.

Unlike before, she was anxious because of fear… But now… It was different. Seeing how Alice is acting, Mary speculated some things inside her head.

“Uhmmm” However, as she was deep in her thought, Alice continued.

“May I ask something?”

In response, Mary slightly nodded her head.

“Why do people seem to hate and despise Lord Brother?” Alice questioned.

She always hears rumours about Alfonso after all and to this day. Not a single time where they uttered Alfonso was a good person. Alice was concerned about why they hated him so much and why are the rumours about him so different to who he really was. Mary was about to answer her when she slowly opened her mouth, however, Alice beat her up to it.

“The rumours about him don’t match his actions from what I have seen… And…” Alice then narrowed her eyes with sadness in her voice. “He is the only noble person who I saw treat commoners as his equal. But why do people seem to not see this?”

Hearing Alice’s complaint Mary then made a faint smile. “He must have been good to you huh” “Umu…” Alice then meekly nodded. Mary expected her agreeableness because she too is confused by Alfonso’s change but glad of it. After a deep silence, Mary then finally spoke, “You see… My Lord… He is a sweet, kind, and caring person” with nostalgia in her eyes. Her eyes glimmered as the past rolled inside her mind. However… Those glimmer of hers soon dissipated, and Mary’s eyes started to fill with sorrow, “However… after an incident happened to him… That sweet boy disappeared…” she continued.

Followed by a long heavy silence. Alice waited for Mary to utter more words but her mouth didn’t budge which led to her finally asking.

“What happened?”

The maid’s eyes then turned towards the little girl, “I don’t have the right to say that. You should ask My Lord Alfonso…” Alice then didn’t ask any further because she noticed that it was personal. But at that same moment, Mary continued speaking.

“I know one thing though, and that’s…”

The little girl then narrowed her eyes and made her ears as sensitive as possible.

“He always wanted a sibling.”

Mary dropped her last words in their conversation before she finally said goodbye to Alice since she had something to do. Meanwhile, Alice was left deep in her thought. Making sense of everything that Alfonso did for her. Until… Finally, it all made sense… Why was he so kind… The reason was that Alfonso truly treated her like a sister, unlike her half-blooded brother and sister. Based on what she heard, Alfonso is deeply misunderstood by the people. People didn’t see the deeper meaning of the actions that Alfonso took. Realizing this she couldn’t help but feel her heartache.

“It must have been lonely…”

Alice quietly murmured relating to Alfonso’s experience.

2 months passed by.
